Competition between the Internet video streaming giants is hotting up after Amazon Video<\/a> added 40 live TV and on-demand channels (e.g. Discovery, Eurosport<\/span>) to their \u00a379\/year or\u00a0\u00a37.99\/mont<\/span>h ‘Prime’ service, although you’ll have to pay an extra monthly fee for each (from \u00a31.49).<\/p>\n

On the surface the move appears like it could threaten Sky’s NOW TV<\/a> service or the established IPTV packages from broadband ISPs like BT<\/a>, Virgin Media<\/a> and TalkTalk<\/a>, although for the time being those platforms probably don’t need to be too concerned because the initial line-up of Amazon<\/a> Channels in the UK is fairly poor and a bit expensive.<\/p>\n

For example, the ‘Discovery’ TV channel is one of the headline features but you’ll pay \u00a34.99 a month to receive that. By comparison you could access Discovery and various premium Sky channels (Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Fox etc.) via NOW TV<\/a>’s Entertainment Pass<\/strong> for a single monthly fee of \u00a36.99 and at that price the charge for just one channel doesn’t make a lot of sense.<\/p>\n

On the other hand some of the channels are niche enough to attract a following, albeit a small one, and Amazon<\/a> plans to add more channels in the future.<\/p>\n

Alex Green, MD of Europe – Amazon<\/a> Channels, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“For the first time, Prime members in the UK and Germany will be able to choose to watch premium TV channels without having to sign up to a bundle or a contract, giving them the freedom to pay for only what they want to watch. From live sport to Bollywood, arthouse cinema to reality TV, and award-winning TV shows from popular channels like Discovery and ITV, Amazon Channels gives power back to customers to choose exactly what they want to watch.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So far as we’re aware the same broadband speed requirements that apply to Amazon Prime Video will also apply to their TV channels, which means that Standard Definition (SD) video quality will demand a connection speed of at least 900Kbps (0.9Mbps) and High Definition (HD) videos need from 3.5Mbps.<\/p>\n
