The stake itself was created as part of <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s \u00a312.5bn merger with <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a>, which was previously owned by Orange and Deutsche Telecom.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As part of that deal Orange was given a 4% stake in the new business (plus around \u00a33.4bn in cash) and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a>&#8217;s other parent, Deutsche Telecom, ended up holding 12% with a seat on the board. However it&#8217;s fair to say that the first half of 2017 has proven to be very difficult for BT (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s strategic review, various fines, the pension deficit and  an Italian accountancy scandal) and as a result the operator&#8217;s share price has taken a big tumble.<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.tradingview.com\/tv.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\nnew TradingView.widget({\n  \"autosize\": true,\n  \"symbol\": \"LSE:BT.A\",\n  \"interval\": \"D\",\n  \"timezone\": \"Europe\/London\",\n  \"theme\": \"White\",\n  \"style\": \"2\",\n  \"locale\": \"en\",\n  \"toolbar_bg\": \"#f1f3f6\",\n  \"enable_publishing\": false,\n  \"hide_top_toolbar\": true,\n  \"save_image\": false,\n  \"hideideas\": true\n});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe French operator had originally pondered selling down its stake at the start of this year, although the rocky ride of the past few months appears to have delayed their plans.
