{"id":14198,"date":"2017-07-04T17:06:55","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T16:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=14198"},"modified":"2017-07-04T17:07:20","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T16:07:20","slug":"uk-government-reannounce-100-business-rates-relief-full-fibre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/07\/uk-government-reannounce-100-business-rates-relief-full-fibre.html","title":{"rendered":"UK Government Reannounce 100% Business Rates Relief on &#8220;Full Fibre&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government has today introduced their new <a href=\"http:\/\/services.parliament.uk\/bills\/2017-19\/telecommunicationsinfrastructurerelieffromnondomesticrates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill 2017-19<\/a>, which among other things sets out the mechanism for supporting their 100% business rates relief on new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> Mobile and &#8220;<em>full-fibre<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>\/P) broadband networks (estimated to be worth \u00a360m).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Chancellor of the Exchequer, <strong>Philip Hammond MP<\/strong>, first unveiled the proposed <strong>5 year relief<\/strong> from business rates on related infrastructure during November 2016&#8217;s Autumn Statement (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/11\/uk-chancellor-details-fttp-broadband-investment-business-rates-relief.html\">here<\/a>) and this will be backdated to <strong>1st April 2017<\/strong>. The measure is naturally designed to complement the new \u00a3400m Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund (DIIF), which was also reannounced this week (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/07\/uk-gov-start-400m-digital-infrastructure-fund-boost-full-fibre-broadband.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Matt Hancock MP, Minister of State for Digital, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want Britain to remain the digital world leader that it is, and that means having the right infrastructure in place that will allow us keep up with the rapid advances in technology now and in the future.<\/p>\n<p>We want to see more commercial investment in the gold standard connectivity that full-fibre provides, and the 100% business rate relief and the Digital Infrastructure investment fund will provide a strong incentive for this.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Marcus Jones, Minister for Local Government, added:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Regardless of where you live or work, we want everyone to benefit from access to the fast, affordable and reliable broadband they need to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>From making it easier to work from home to allowing digital businesses to flourish, our measures are creating the right conditions for more high-skilled, high-paid jobs of the future.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve already committed \u00a3400 million for new digital infrastructure fund and this Government\u2019s Digital Strategy is helping bring together business organisations, local authorities and communications providers.<\/p>\n<p>Now the Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill is going one step further to kick start the installation of new fibre, paving the way for better connectivity across the country.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new relief is most welcome and should indeed be a good tool for encouraging new network operators to roll-out their <strong>Fibre-to-the-Premise<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>\/H) based &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; broadband networks, although its advantages may be reduced by the government&#8217;s hike in rates for existing operators (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/02\/uk-fibre-optic-tax-bt-virgin-media-fear-1-3bn-business-rates-hike.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Last year the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadbanduk.org\" target=\"_new\">Broadband Stakeholders Group<\/a> suggested that the aforementioned hike could push <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s related annual bills in England alone from \u00a3165m to \u00a3743m from 1st April 2017.
