{"id":14211,"date":"2017-07-06T09:18:30","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T08:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=14211"},"modified":"2017-07-06T09:24:12","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T08:24:12","slug":"researcher-publishes-new-map-broadband-speed-united-kingdom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/07\/researcher-publishes-new-map-broadband-speed-united-kingdom.html","title":{"rendered":"Researcher Publishes New Map of Broadband Speed in the United Kingdom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A senior researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University College London<\/a>&#8216;s (UCL) Department of Geography, <a href=\"http:\/\/oobrien.com\/2017\/07\/broadband-speed-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oliver O&#8217;Brien<\/a>, has taken data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> and used it to produce a new map of estimated broadband speeds across the country, which reveals some very familiar Digital Divides between different areas.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.cdrc.ac.uk\/#\/metrics\/bband\/default\/BTTTFTT\/7\/-2.0777\/52.6584\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interactive map<\/a><\/strong> claims to depict &#8220;<em>actual average download speed based on the deal people have signed up for, not the maximum attainable download speed (either theoretical or actual) in an area<\/em>&#8220;. Since this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s &#8220;<em>most recent<\/em>&#8221; data then the figures probably reflect optimistic estimates (sync speeds), which often perform a bit better than real-world connections.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that the data was compiled by the regulator during June 2016, which makes it over a year out of date (we&#8217;ve seen the coverage of &#8220;<em>superfast broadband<\/em>&#8221; increase by around 5%+ since then &#8211; mostly in rural areas) and on top of that there&#8217;s no split by different broadband technology types.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless the map still does a good job of showing the broadband slowspots in both urban areas (e.g. central London) and many rural locations (dark red areas), although ideally this sort of data should be contrasted against raw network availability.
