{"id":15278,"date":"2018-01-17T10:22:12","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T10:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=15278"},"modified":"2018-01-17T13:08:18","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T13:08:18","slug":"truespeed-attempt-best-bt-200mbps-guaranteed-broadband-speed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/01\/truespeed-attempt-best-bt-200mbps-guaranteed-broadband-speed.html","title":{"rendered":"TrueSpeed Try to Beat BT with 200Mbps Guaranteed Broadband Speed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK ISP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truespeed.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TrueSpeed<\/a>, which is deploying a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband network into rural areas around South West England, has attempted to steal some of the thunder from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s new 100Mbps &#8220;<em>speed guarantee<\/em>&#8221; by showcasing their own 200Mbps &#8220;<em>guarantee<\/em>&#8220;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> launched their new range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> powered &#8220;<em>ULTRAFAST<\/em>&#8221; broadband packages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/01\/uk-isp-bt-launch-152mbps-314mbps-ultrafast-broadband-packages.html\">here<\/a>) and as part of that the provider introduced a 100Mbps speed guarantee. &#8220;<em>We want you to feel confident Ultrafast Fibre won\u2019t let you down. So if your speed ever falls below 100Mb, we\u2019ll give you \u00a320 compensation<\/em>,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> (the same also applies if your uploads fall below 10Mbps).<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of BT Consumer, <strong>Marc Allera<\/strong>, also claimed that they were &#8220;<em>the first and only company to guarantee speeds of 100Mbps for our customers, even at peak times<\/em>&#8221; (we assume he was ignoring business connectivity and leased lines). However, on exactly the same day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TrueSpeed<\/a> published a new video to showcase their pledge of a 200Mbps guarantee and that&#8217;s for symmetrical performance (note: their entry-level package runs at 200Mbps).<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Truespeed Animation - How We Do What We Do! [Shared Line Version]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Pr-EMvuahs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The video sees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TrueSpeed<\/a> pledge that &#8220;<em>our fibre network gives every customer guaranteed minimum rocket speeds of 200 Megabits per second upload and download, even at peak times<\/em>.&#8221; This is naturally a reference to their own network, excluding external <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> and internet servers etc. (those are out of the ISPs ability to control).<\/p>\n<p>However one apparent caveat to this otherwise impressive pledge would appear to be that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TrueSpeed<\/a> don&#8217;t seem to support it with an offer of compensation, should performance fall below the promised level. Generally guarantees do need to be supported by something, otherwise they become the marketing equivalent of a paper tiger.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that TrueSpeed&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truespeed.com\/\/resources\/downloads\/TrueSpeedTermsAndConditions-20171013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T&amp;Cs<\/a> appear to contradict the claim in several clauses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>TrueSpeed T&amp;Cs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>6.12<\/strong> We cannot guarantee the Service will be fault-free. We strive to reach a 99.9% availability target for our UltraFast Residential and Home Office Services, however, although this is a guaranteed service level target, it is not guaranteed for our residential products. We will commit all reasonable resource to maintain this target.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.3<\/strong> We do not guarantee that maximum transmission speeds can be obtained at any particular time over our network. Unlike traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a>, where your line speed may vary depending on a number of factors, traffic on your TrueSpeed line will always be the speed you have purchased.<\/p>\n<p>However, in line with industry standards, we engineer our network to take advantage of the fact that we do not expect every customer to use 100% of their capacity all of the time. At peak usage times, you may experience a small amount of congestion on the network as a result. We monitor our network closely and will endeavour to minimise congestion where and when necessary.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; broadband ISPs have to pay for their data capacity and no doubt there will be times when that aspect comes under some strain, although today&#8217;s internet and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> constraints do tend to mean that most people will rarely be using the full speed of such a fast connection (i.e. you\u2019re unlikely to notice unless the ISP is being very conservative with their network capacity).<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, TrueSpeed&#8217;s video also pokes some fun at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>&#8217;s GPON based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> network, which can indeed suffer from some restrictions. On the other hand the claim &#8220;<em>that you are just back to the bad old days of network contention and fluctuating speeds<\/em>&#8221; with GPON is perhaps a little unfair.<\/p>\n<p>A GPON based FTTP solution has its limitations but it is still in a completely different league to the old ADSL2 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/vdsl\">VDSL2<\/a> services and shouldn&#8217;t be conflated with those. Similarly recent enhancements to the GPON standards have added support for Gigabit class speeds, although you won\u2019t see many symmetrical connections around.<\/p>\n<p>TrueSpeed&#8217;s network is currently also significantly smaller than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> and FTTP one that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> are building, although that&#8217;s a topic for another day. We have of course shot off an email to ask TrueSpeed about how they are underpinning the guarantee and will report back if they respond.
