Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre<\/a> has appointed Allan McEwan to be the City Development Manager for Aberdeen in Scotland, which is set to benefit from a joint \u00a340m project with UK ISP Vodafone<\/a> to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH<\/a>) broadband network by around 2021.<\/p>\n

At present Aberdeen<\/strong> is already home to a 100km Dark Fibre<\/strong> network, which is owned by Cityfibre<\/a> and used to served local public sector sites and businesses. This network will provide a useful stepping stone for the future deployment to local homes, which was announced in February 2018 and construction is set to begin in July 2018 (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The new City Development Manager will thus be charged with turning Aberdeen “into one of Europe\u2019s best-connected cities<\/em>” and he will also act as the local point of contact for all city stakeholders. Allan has previously served as the Senior Business Development Manager within Petrofac, which is a service provider for the oil and gas production \/ processing industry (not quite the same as fibre).<\/p>\n

Allan McEwan said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“This is a hugely exciting time to join CityFibre<\/a> as it prepares to start work on its rollout of full fibre internet and I am delighted to be playing a key role in bringing this transformative infrastructure to the people of Aberdeen.<\/p>\n

I want to ensure that everyone across the city is aware of the potential benefits of full fibre connectivity, not only to businesses but also to residents. I will be working closely with Aberdeen City Council, who have been hugely supportive of our plans, and developing additional opportunities and ensuring our community engagement programme is as robust as possible.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Rob Hamlin, Commercial Director of CityFibre, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Allan\u2019s knowledge of Aberdeen is first rate and I can think of nobody better placed to lead the roll out of our \u2018Fibre to the Premises\u2019 programme, which will see CityFibre invest \u00a340m into the city.
