{"id":1650,"date":"2012-09-12T10:18:01","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T09:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1650"},"modified":"2012-09-12T10:47:59","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T09:47:59","slug":"fibre-garden-project-wins-first-uk-rural-community-broadband-cash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/09\/fibre-garden-project-wins-first-uk-rural-community-broadband-cash.html","title":{"rendered":"Fibre GarDen in Cumbria Wins First UK Rural Community Broadband Cash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK governments <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.defra.gov.uk\" target=\"_new\">Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs<\/a> (DEFRA) has today given its first of two pre-contract agreements for <strong>\u00a3157,500<\/strong> to help 525 homes and businesses in <strong>Garsdale<\/strong> and <strong>Dentdale<\/strong> (Cumbria) gain access to a superfast &#8220;<em>fibre optic<\/em>&#8221; broadband service through its \u00a320m <strong>Rural Community Broadband Fund<\/strong> (RCBF).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/fibre-garden.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Fibre GarDen<\/strong><\/a> project aims to create a fibre optic network that connects every property in the two &#8220;<em>isolated and sparsely populated upland rural communities<\/em>&#8220;, with initial speeds expected to reach <strong>100Mbps<\/strong> (Megabits per second). This will be built and operated by the <strong>Fibre GarDen CIC<\/strong> community interest company.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that a second community project in the isolated <strong>Fell End<\/strong> (<em>Ravenstonedale<\/em>) region of Cumbria, where <strong>sub-0.5Mbps speeds<\/strong> are currently the norm, has also won investment of <strong>\u00a317,400<\/strong> from the RCBF. This will help to connect <strong>58 local premises<\/strong> to a super-fast broadband service.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Maria Miller MP, Culture Secretary, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Superfast broadband is key to the economic prosperity of rural communities. The Government is investing \u00a3680 million in delivering the best broadband in Europe \u2013 and we are slashing red tape to get the programme moving quickly.
