{"id":17078,"date":"2018-09-27T07:10:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T06:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=17078"},"modified":"2018-09-27T15:23:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T14:23:06","slug":"isp-bt-set-to-trial-new-faster-smart-hub-2-broadband-router","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/09\/isp-bt-set-to-trial-new-faster-smart-hub-2-broadband-router.html","title":{"rendered":"ISP BT Set to Trial New Faster Smart Hub 2 Broadband Router"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s Consumer Test and Trials team has begun inviting a select few of their UK home broadband subscribers to take part in a new beta trial of their forthcoming &#8220;<em>Smart Hub 2<\/em>&#8221; (SH2) wireless router, which is naturally promising to deliver &#8220;<em>even better performance and new features<\/em>&#8220;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The original <strong>Smart Hub<\/strong> launched in 2016 and at the time it was quite an impressive piece of kit for a bundled device (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/06\/uk-isp-bt-launches-new-smart-hub-wireless-broadband-router.html\">here<\/a>). Since then we&#8217;ve also seen a couple of different variations, such as the recent <strong>Smart Hub X<\/strong> for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> users (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/01\/uk-isp-bt-launch-new-smart-hub-x-router-g-fast-broadband.html\">here<\/a>) and a slightly different model for their &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> customers.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"border-radius: 4px; border: 1px solid #d6d6d6; box-shadow: 0 4px 8px 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2), 0 6px 20px 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.19);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2018-article-illustrations\/bt_smart_hub_2_beta_trial.jpg\" alt=\"bt_smart_hub_2_beta_trial\" width=\"80%\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Historically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> has usually allowed a few months for testing before launch, which means that this one will probably drop sometime during early 2019. At the very least we&#8217;d expect it to support the latest 802.11ac Wave 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> specification like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>&#8217;s new <strong>Wi-Fi Hub<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/05\/new-and-faster-wifi-router-spotted-at-broadband-isp-talktalk.html\">here<\/a>) and they&#8217;ll almost certainly be adding full VoIP (phone port) support due to the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/05\/openreach-hints-at-sogea-uk-standalone-fttc-broadband-prices.html\">SOGEA<\/a> (standalone broadband) service.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that there&#8217;s an outside chance that they might include support for the bleeding edge 802.11ax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> standard (10Gbps capable), as well as WPA3 wireless encryption (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/01\/wi-fi-wireless-networks-get-tougher-wpa3-encryption-security.html\">here<\/a>), although we&#8217;ve heard it won&#8217;t (too early for those). The new router is otherwise expected include support for their latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> based &#8220;<em>ultrafast broadband<\/em>&#8221; packages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> like other ISPs has often tried to claim a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> performance lead on their rivals, which is at risk after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> launched the new Wi-Fi Hub and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> announced their impressive <strong>Gigafast Broadband Router<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/09\/isp-vodafone-reveal-uk-prices-for-1gbps-ftth-home-broadband.html\">here<\/a>).
