{"id":17269,"date":"2018-10-24T08:35:11","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T07:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=17269"},"modified":"2018-10-24T08:35:11","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T07:35:11","slug":"vodafone-gets-three-uk-tv-ad-banned-for-misleading-snapchat-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/10\/vodafone-gets-three-uk-tv-ad-banned-for-misleading-snapchat-offer.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodafone Gets Three UK TV Ad Banned for Misleading Snapchat Offer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> has been told to pull yet another advert for their service after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> complained that one of their TV promotions, which told viewers that they could &#8220;<em>use Snapchat all you like, without using up your data &#8230; only on Three<\/em>&#8220;, was &#8220;<em>misleading<\/em>&#8221; because they offered a similar plan.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/asa\" target=\"_blank\">Advertising Standards Authority<\/a> (ASA), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> pointed out that their sub-brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/voxi\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">VOXI<\/a> also promoted &#8220;<em>unlimited use of social media apps without eating your data<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> mobile broadband data allowance), although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> countered that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/voxi\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">VOXI<\/a><\/strong> was only available to consumers aged 25 and under.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KKybgoDsA7k<\/p>\n<p>Three also said that they believed the small print in one of the adverts sufficiently qualified the claim, by stating: &#8220;<em>Only on Three on selected plans can anyone use Go Binge to enjoy Snapchat without using up data, with no upper age limits. Snapchat minimum age 13. Must have regular data.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ASA didn&#8217;t agree with Three&#8217;s position and decided to uphold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>&#8217;s complaint.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/rulings\/hutchison-3g-uk-ltd-a18-455041.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ASA Ruling (REF: A18-455041)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We acknowledged the partnership that Three had with Snapchat, which meant that unique content was available to customers of Three. We also acknowledged their reference to the small print in ad (b) and to further information on their website. However, we did not consider that the text in the small print was sufficient to override the impression that they were the only network to offer a service that allowed customers to use Snapchat without using monthly data.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, because the ads implied Three was the only network to allow customers to use Snapchat without using up their monthly data allowance when those under the age of 25 (or 30) received the same service from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/voxi\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Voxi<\/a>, we concluded that the claim \u201cOnly on Three\u201d was likely to mislead.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As usual the ASA told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> to stop promoting the offer as being only available on their network. The development comes only one week after the advertising watchdog forced Three UK to pull another promotion that claimed customers could &#8220;<em>Roam the world in 71 destinations at no extra cost,<\/em>&#8221; even though limits did apply to Mobile Broadband data usage (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/10\/three-uk-mobile-ad-banned-for-misleading-data-roaming-claim.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator Three UK has been told to pull yet another advert for their service after Vodafone complained that one of their TV promotions, which told viewers that they could &#8220;use Snapchat all you like, without using up your data &#8230; only on Three&#8220;, was &#8220;misleading&#8221; because they offered a similar plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[99,63,96],"class_list":["post-17269","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-asa","tag-three-uk","tag-vodafone"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
