Last year UK ISP Hyperoptic<\/a> announced that “thousands<\/em>” of homes across 12 of Thurrock’s (Essex) social housing developments would get access to their 1Gbps fibre optic (FTTP<\/a>\/B) broadband network. Today we learn that a further 20 such sites will benefit, thanks to an extension of their agreement with the Council.<\/p>\n

The original deployment (here<\/a>) was expected to benefit approximately 1,700 tenants<\/strong> in the related areas \/ buildings and further 1,400 tenants<\/strong> will benefit from the new expansion (total of 3,100 tenants). The announcement follows hot on the heels of last week’s news, which saw the ISP confirm that they now expected to reach more than 160,000 social housing properties across the United Kingdom (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

As usual Hyperoptic<\/a> will build a Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (FTTP<\/a>) \/ Fibre-to-the-Building<\/strong> (FTTB) style network to serve the extra developments. All of which will help them on their way to covering a total of 2 million UK premises<\/strong> in predominantly large urban apartment blocks or office buildings by 2022 and possibly then 5 million by 2025 (here<\/a> and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Floyd Widener, Hyperoptic’s Chief Sales Officer, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We are committed to work hand-in-glove with the public sector to help get tenants online, so they can benefit from everything the Internet has to offer.<\/p>\n

Thurrock Council was among our first council partnerships and we have continued to work closely with them to monitor the positive feedback and impact of our connectivity, which we are delighted to provide at zero cost to the taxpayer.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Cllr Barry Johnson, Thurrock Councillor for Housing, added:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The availability of flexible packages such as a broadband-only service and contract-free options has meant we have also been able to remove some of the barriers for our tenants.<\/p>\n

The feedback so far has been very pleasing and I am delighted we have now extended the agreement to include a further 20 of our social housing developments.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Customers of the new service typically pay from just \u00a317 per month for their entry-level unlimited 30Mbps service and this rises up to \u00a349 for the top symmetrical 1000Mbps ultrafast broadband package.
