{"id":17378,"date":"2018-11-08T00:01:21","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T00:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=17378"},"modified":"2018-11-07T15:24:08","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T15:24:08","slug":"o2-uk-preps-europes-largest-fibre-connected-small-cell-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/11\/o2-uk-preps-europes-largest-fibre-connected-small-cell-network.html","title":{"rendered":"O2 UK Preps Europe&#8217;s Largest Fibre Connected Small Cell Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (Telefonica UK) has signed a new collaboration agreement with the Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG), which will support the development of what is expected to be &#8220;<em>Europe&#8217;s largest fibre connected small cell network<\/em>&#8221; and trials of driverless vehicles using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> tech in the West Midlands.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The scheme, which is due to be launched in <strong>2020<\/strong>, will see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> provide connectivity and related engineering support along a 50-mile (80km) route that runs through <strong>Birmingham<\/strong> and <strong>Coventry<\/strong>. All of this will be used to underpin the <strong>\u00a325m<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/midlandsfuturemobility.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Midlands Future Mobility<\/a> project for testing and developing the next generation of driverless cars etc.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government has previously said that it wants the country to be &#8220;<em>at the forefront<\/em>&#8221; of self-driving cars and in 2018, proposed that autonomous cars will be in use commercially by 2021. In keeping with that their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/5g-urban-connected-communities-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>5G Urban Connected Communities Project<\/strong><\/a> (worth up to \u00a375m) is also proposing to setup a &#8220;<em>large-scale<\/em>&#8221; test bed of next generation Gigabit speed capable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> wireless technology in the West Midlands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/09\/first-uk-multi-city-5g-mobile-test-bed-to-begin-in-the-west-midlands.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Brendan O\u2019Reilly, CTO at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following our successful deployment of the UK&#8217;s first centralised radio network (C-RAN) in Aberdeen, in partnership with WIG, we will be using this same cutting-edge technology across what we expect to be Europe\u2019s largest fibre connected small cell network. Mobile powers our modern world and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> has even more potential to move Britain forward which is why we\u2019re excited to be working together with WIG to continue to build this technology into the fabric of our cities and communities.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Scott Coates, CEO of WIG, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are delighted to be working with O2 to build this 5G ready neutral host infrastructure. The new infrastructure will enable services by O2 and will also be open to other mobile operators to join.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We should point out that O2&#8217;s new network is only described as being &#8220;<em>5G ready<\/em>,&#8221; which without more detail could cover a multitude of sins.
