{"id":17439,"date":"2018-11-16T02:38:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T02:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=17439"},"modified":"2018-11-15T17:00:52","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T17:00:52","slug":"essex-council-warns-of-challenges-to-gigaclears-broadband-rollout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/11\/essex-council-warns-of-challenges-to-gigaclears-broadband-rollout.html","title":{"rendered":"Essex Council Warn of Challenges to Gigaclear&#8217;s Broadband Rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Essex County Council has confirmed that it will meet next week in order to discuss some of the &#8220;<em>challenging<\/em>&#8221; work conditions that UK ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> are said to be facing in the county, where they hold several state aid supported contracts for the roll-out of a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband network.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Over the past month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> has been in the news for all the wrong reasons after a number of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> linked contracts in Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Fastershire (Gloucestershire \/ Herefordshire), Devon and Somerset suffered significant delays (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/10\/berkshire-uk-coughs-to-openreach-and-gigaclear-broadband-delays.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/11\/no-solution-yet-for-gigaclears-fttp-rollout-in-devon-and-somerset.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/10\/gigaclears-fttp-broadband-delays-spread-to-northamptonshire.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/10\/gigaclear-told-to-revise-fastershire-fttp-broadband-rollout-plan.html\">here<\/a>). As a result some areas have been told that they may have to wait an extra 2 years on top of what was previously planned.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the issues have been linked back to problems with a lack of contractor capacity (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/01\/carillion-fall-fears-openreach-gigaclear-broadband-contracts.html\">Carillon collapse<\/a> didn&#8217;t help), management, challenges during the build and problems with planning. The good news is that they&#8217;ve had a change of management and fresh investment. As a result the provider now appears to be getting their house in order, but political anger and disagreement over the delays is an on-going issue in some counties.<\/p>\n<p>Recently we&#8217;ve also received a few concerns from people in <strong>Essex<\/strong>, although so far the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.superfastessex.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Superfast Essex<\/a><\/strong> team haven&#8217;t said anything in public. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> has successfully completed a <strong>Phase 2B<\/strong> contract (4,000 premises in Epping Forest) in the county, but they do have on-going <strong>Phase 3<\/strong> work (8,300 premises in Uttlesford and Central North by Dec 2019) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/07\/gigaclear-sign-3-1m-deal-to-extend-fttp-broadband-in-essex-uk.html\">recently won<\/a> the contract for <strong>Phase 4a<\/strong> (2,100 premises in Epping Forest).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>An Essex County Council Spokesperson told ISPreview.co.uk:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Essex, Gigaclear&#8217;s work is proving challenging as the network build becomes more complex. We have a meeting planned to review the delivery schedule and any potential associated risks next week.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ISP has clarified to us that the meeting will discuss the scheduling of their on-going Phase 3 project. Unfortunately we won&#8217;t know more until after that meeting has taken place, but as this is a smaller roll-out then we&#8217;d hope it won\u2019t be too badly affected.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that their Phase 4a contract was agreed fairly recently and so should have already taken into account the current climate.
