{"id":1749,"date":"2012-09-26T13:17:50","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T12:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1749"},"modified":"2012-09-26T13:17:50","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T12:17:50","slug":"average-global-residential-fibre-optic-broadband-tariffs-getting-cheaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/09\/average-global-residential-fibre-optic-broadband-tariffs-getting-cheaper.html","title":{"rendered":"Average Global Residential Fibre Optic Broadband Tariffs Getting Cheaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telecoms analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> has today revealed that the <strong>average cost of standalone broadband<\/strong> packages (tariffs) offered to consumers has continued to fall for superfast fibre optic and cable based broadband ISP packages, yet the price of slower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a> (e.g. ADSL2+) services has stayed fairly flat.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to note from the graph below that the <strong>average monthly charge<\/strong> for fibre based services is now more or less the same as for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a>, which is despite the fact that <strong>fibre optic<\/strong> internet connections can deliver significantly faster speeds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a>&#8217;s global database of operators found that the <strong>average world download bandwidth<\/strong> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a> stood at <strong>6.8Mbps<\/strong> (Megabits per second), while cable (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>) scored <strong>34.2Mbps<\/strong> and fibre <strong>67.8Mbps<\/strong>. This is believed to be based off average headline \/ advertised figures rather than slower real-world performance.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2012-internet-statistics\/global_residential_broadband_prices_2012.gif\" alt=\"global residential broadband prices 2012\" \/><\/div>\n<p>It should be noted that PPP in this context stands for <strong>Purchasing Power Parity<\/strong> and allows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> to make direct comparisons of tariffs across the world by adjusting the local currency and exchange rate to make the buying power of $1 (PPP) in country A equal to $1 (PPP) in country B.<\/p>\n<p>So why the low fibre prices? As ever there are many reasons but one of the biggest is the simple fact that fibre is effectively forced to compete with existing DSL packages, which are often cheaper but slower. At least they use to be.
