Better yet, the tax break is set to last for 10 long years until 31st March 2029.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The UK Government has had a 5 year holiday on <strong>business rates<\/strong> for new fibre optic (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-110 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"fttp\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_fibre_optic.php\">FTTP<\/a> \/ FTTH) broadband infrastructure since <strong>1st April 2017<\/strong>. Many operators have called for this to be extended, not least since such providers usually have to plan their investments over much longer periods of 10-15 years in order to reflect the lengthy payback for such expensive upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Scotland&#8217;s \u00a3600 million <strong>R100<\/strong> programme is currently in the process of choosing a supplier, which will have the difficult job of getting as close as possible to universal coverage of <strong>30Mbps+<\/strong> &#8220;<em>superfast broadband<\/em>&#8221; by the end of 2021 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/12\/scotland-commit-600m-100-coverage-30mbps-broadband.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/03\/scotland-names-isp-bidders-for-100-superfast-broadband-rollout.html\">here<\/a>); March 2022 as a financial year. In keeping with that effort they&#8217;ve now introduced an even longer holiday on business rates.<\/p>\n<p>The relevant legislation for this change was finally laid before the Scottish Parliament on <strong>18th February 2019<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ssi\/2019\/43\/pdfs\/ssi_20190043_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>), although ISPreview.co.uk somehow managed to overlook this important development until today. The change itself formed part of last year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/scottish-budget-2019-20\/pages\/4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Scottish Budget 2019-2020<\/strong><\/a> announcement.<\/p>\n<p>The development will make it significantly more affordable to build new &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-110 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"fttp\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_fibre_optic.php\">FTTP<\/a>\/H) broadband networks over the next decade, which should be particularly useful in Scotland where there&#8217;s a lot of wide open and quite rugged terrain to dig with optical fibre cables.
