{"id":1828,"date":"2012-10-09T12:59:06","date_gmt":"2012-10-09T11:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1828"},"modified":"2012-10-09T13:01:09","modified_gmt":"2012-10-09T12:01:09","slug":"virgin-media-uk-boosts-superfast-100mbps-broadband-customers-to-120mbps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/virgin-media-uk-boosts-superfast-100mbps-broadband-customers-to-120mbps.html","title":{"rendered":"Virgin Media UK Boost Superfast 100Mbps Broadband Customers to 120Mbps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National UK cable operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> has begun the final phase of their plan to <strong>double its customers broadband speeds<\/strong> by upgrading their existing 100Mbps (Megabits per second) subscribers to the slightly faster download rate of <strong>120Mbps<\/strong> (12Mbps uploads).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Readers might recall that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> initially confused some customers with their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/story\/2012\/03\/01\/virgin-media-starts-national-uk-rollout-of-its-free-double-broadband-speed-boost.html\" target=\"_blank\">original announcement<\/a>, which left many wrongfully expecting to see a boost from 100Mbps\u00a0to <strong>200Mbps<\/strong>. This was never going to happen as Virgin had only just started the deployment of its 100Mbps product and thus 120Mbps was offered instead.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Jon James, Virgin Medias Executive Director of Broadband, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> has led the greatest developments in broadband in the UK over the last decade and our 120Mb service continues to ensure that our consumers across the country get the very best that today&#8217;s technology offers<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 18 month long project, which was first announced in March 2012 and is due for <strong>completion by the middle of 2013<\/strong>, has so far upgraded 40% of the provider\u2019s network. But the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/07\/isp-virgin-media-uk-staying-stum-on-future-200mbps-broadband-service.html\" target=\"_blank\">prospect of a 200Mbps package is still very real<\/a> and related trials are on-going, with the original plan being to launch by the end of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s perhaps no coincidence that 120Mbps is also roughly what the next upgrade to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s rival <strong>Fibre-to-the-Cabinet<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) technology might deliver in the not too distant future, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>\u2019s new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>-on-Demand<\/strong> product could make expensive speeds of up to 330Mbps available across its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> footprint (due Spring 2013). Virgin Media might well decide to wait until those services arrive before stealing some of their thunder with a 200Mbps package.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile there&#8217;s still the question of what to do with all that speed (assuming there&#8217;s enough capacity to supply it)?
