Local residents, businesses and visitors to the West Yorkshire market town of Wetherby can now access wireless internet speeds of up to 1Gbps from a free public WiFi<\/a> network, which is being run by Harrogate-based ISP IntechnologyWiFi on behalf of the Town Council.<\/p>\n

The new network, which has been installed around the town centre at “no cost to the taxpayer<\/em>” (Leeds City Council supported the project by providing access to local street furniture), has been given the name (SSID) “_wetherbyfreewifi<\/em>“. However Gigabit capable public WiFi<\/a> is often a lot slower than the stated peak speed due to all the usual issues of shared capacity, end-user device limitations and signal quality etc.<\/p>\n

Apparently IntechnologyWiFi will also be providing its lifestyle app, Citi-Wise, featuring relevant local content about things to do and see in Wetherby.<\/p>\n

A Spokesperson for Wetherby Town Council said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We are delighted that IntechnologyWiFi is investing in Wetherby to increase our access to the digital economy.<\/p>\n

We appreciate that we have a charming, historic town and we like that, but equally we recognise that technology is always moving forwards and creating new opportunities for business and tourism.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s wonderful that Wetherby will be at the forefront of technology. Free public WiFi will attract more people into our town centre and is a real advantage for us and for local businesses.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Natalie Duffield, CEO of IntechnologyWiFi, added:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Wetherby is a beautiful town with a rich history but internet access has been patchy which can limit opportunities in this digital age.<\/p>\n

We have installed the best available technologies across the town centre for the benefit of local businesses, residents and visitors.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
