As the first half of 2019 comes to an end we’ve taken a look back to see how average broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the top fastest national fixed line ISPs and 4G<\/a> mobile operators. Overall the picture is one of gradual improvement, thanks to rising take-up of faster connections.<\/p>\n

Consumer service speeds tend to increase for two primary reasons, a) the impact of increased coverage by faster connectivity technologies and, b) their associated take-up by consumers. In keeping with that the coverage of “superfast broadband<\/em>” (24Mbps+<\/strong>) capable fixed line networks (available to 96% of UK premises) and 4G<\/a> mobile infrastructure (97-99% population coverage but only 67% geographic by all operators) is now slowly reaching maturity.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile there has also been a rapid increase in the availability of “ultrafast<\/em>” (100Mbps+<\/strong>) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (FTTP<\/a>) networks (available to 7% of UK premises), as well as Virgin Media<\/a>’s DOCSIS<\/a> (cable) infrastructure (available to around half of premises) and Openreach<\/a>’s new “ultrafast<\/em>” (100Mbps+<\/strong>) hybrid fibre G.fast<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n

In terms of take-up, Ofcom<\/a> revealed that at the end of 2018 some 45% of live fixed line connections were now “superfast<\/em>” services (up from 38% in 2017 and 31% in 2016 – here<\/a>). We should point out that Virgin Media<\/a> has recently launched a new 500Mbps top-tier (here<\/a>), but early take-up of that won’t have much of an impact on the results below.<\/p>\n

Data Caveats:<\/strong> Every home is different and speedtests are affected by all sorts of issues such as slow WiFi<\/a>, limitations of the test itself, local network congestion and package choice (an ISP may offer 1Gbps but a lot of people will pick a slower \/ cheaper plan).<\/div>\n

The Fastest Fixed Line Broadband ISPs (H1 2019)
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

In this list we only include independent providers with strong national availability. On the following page we’ll also take a closer look at the performance of the fastest alternative network (altnet) ISPs, which sadly tend not to produce much data and aren’t yet available to the vast majority of premises (i.e. we can only display a few of these due to limited data samples).<\/p>\n

The results below are naturally also more reflective of take-up than network availability. For example, some ISPs may have a significantly larger portion of customers on slower pure copper ADSL<\/a> lines (e.g. the slowest providers below), which will weigh against anybody on faster fibre optic or hybrid fibre lines with the same provider (pushing average speeds down).<\/p>\n

The following data has been extracted from Thinkbroadband<\/a>‘s independent database (including our Broadband Speedtest<\/a><\/strong>). Please take these results with a pinch of salt because the market is a lot more complicated than speedtest based data can show.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> The top 10% result (below in brackets) represents the speed experienced by the fastest 10% of users on each ISP. The results are in ‘Megabits per second’ and averages are in ‘mean’. Data was processed at the start of June 2019.<\/div>\n

Overall the average download speed<\/strong> of the top ten national providers was 36.74Mbps (up from 34.99Mbps at the end of 2018) and the average upload speed<\/strong> hit 8.32Mbps (up from 7.99Mbps). Not a lot has changed over the past six months in terms of download performance, other than the gradual upward trend but even this is much reduced over our last report at the same time in 2018 (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The reason for this year’s milder improvement is likely to be because FTTC<\/a> coverage has now reached maturity and many of those who wanted to upgrade will have already done so. Meanwhile the new generation of Gigabit capable “full fibre<\/em>” networks are still suffering from a lack of wider ISP support and limited coverage, although their growth is starting to surge.<\/p>\n

Now flick over to page 2 to see how the fastest alternative network ISPs and mobile operators performed.<\/p>\n

Before moving on to mobile operators we’re going to examine how some of the more established alternative network (AltNet) providers – those that have built their own physically separate networks – compare with the mainstream national ISPs. Sadly most altnets only have comparatively niche network coverage and limited speedtest data, which means that at present we can only summarise a few.<\/p>\n

Excluding KCOM<\/a>, which continue to have a large proportion of customers on older copper line services in East Yorkshire, almost all of the altnets below tend to exclusively build “full fibre<\/em>” (FTTP<\/a>) infrastructure, which is capable of offering Gigabit (1Gbps) class broadband speeds. We should add that the results for Wessex Internet<\/a> cover both their fixed wireless and FTTP<\/a> network.<\/p>\n

The performance scores recorded below may of course be lower due to all of the data caveats mentioned earlier (slow Wi-Fi, package choice etc.). In order to save space we’ve also adopted a slightly different table format by sticking the 2019 H1 and 2018 H2 results side-by-side in the same columns. Clearly nearly all of these altnets are delivering better speeds than the largest national providers above and it will probably stay that way until general FTTP availability improves. The government’s ambition is for “nationwide<\/em>” coverage of “full fibre<\/em>” networks by 2033.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile we consider B4RN<\/a> to be somewhat of an anomaly this time around (their score is way below what we know their network can actually deliver). Unusual variations in performance like this tend to be created by very small test samples and possibly the impact of weak WiFi<\/a> connectivity. This is particularly odd since B4RN<\/a>’s only package is a 1Gbps service, while the other ISPs all offer a choice of slower plans.<\/p>\n

The Fastest Mobile Operators (H1 2019)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Accurately gauging performance on the four largest mobile network operators is perhaps an unrealistic expectation due to the very variable nature of the technology. Users of such services are always moving through different areas (indoor, outdoor, underground etc.) and the environment around them (weather, trees, buildings etc.) is similarly changeable.<\/p>\n

Suffice to say that studies of mobile broadband performance should be considered open to variation, although the top networks tend to be those with a combination of the best 4G<\/a> coverage, a good amount of radio spectrum and the most advanced technology (e.g. LTE-Advanced and Carrier Aggregation for harnessing multiple spectrum bands).<\/p>\n

Right now EE<\/a>, which claims to have the strongest level of geographic UK network coverage (around 91% and aiming for 95% by the end of 2020), is in the best position with regards to those aforementioned strengths. However this may start to change later in 2019 as the first commercial deployments of ultrafast 5G<\/a> technology start to have an impact, but that will take several years to roll-out.<\/p>\n

Overall the average download speed<\/strong> of the four primary mobile operators was 22.45Mbps (up from 21.4Mbps at the end of 2018) and the average upload speed<\/strong> hit 5.53Mbps (up from 4.85Mbps). However the biggest change over the past 6 months appears to stem from bottom dwelling O2<\/a>, which may be starting to benefit from its recent rollout of the new 2.3GHz band for 4G services (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

As usual we must caveat that mobile services are subject to the daily movements and radically differing hardware choices (Smartphones etc.) of their end-users, as well as the different spectrum bands and network capacity available to any specific area or operator. All of this makes it painfully difficult to establish a reliable picture of performance.<\/p>\n

We should point out that the current government has told all operators to deliver 95% geographic mobile coverage by the end of 2022 (here<\/a>), although they didn’t specifically name drop 4G connectivity. A number of solutions to help achieve this (e.g. the Single Rural Network<\/a><\/strong>) are being considered and Ofcom<\/a>’s forthcoming auction of the 700MHz<\/strong> band looks set to include new coverage obligations (here<\/a>) but these are not yet set in stone.<\/p>\n

Overall we do not consider the above speedtest based data – either for mobile or fixed lines – to be a reliable barometer for individual users, but it can help to highlight general changes in the market. The ever expanding reach of faster networks and take-up means that we will continue to see a general upward curve as consumers upgrade to use ever faster services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
