Sadly a speedtest of the network struggled to get anywhere close to the often promoted Gigabit broadband speeds.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The trial forms part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>&#8217;s pre-live deployment phase, with Birmingham already being named as one of their 19 initial roll-out locations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/03\/vodafone-names-19-uk-cities-for-commercial-5g-mobile-rollout.html\">full details<\/a>). At present the technology is somewhat limited by the lack of Smartphones with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> capable modem, which means that most of these tests tend to use a Mobile Broadband router and then distribute the signal to devices with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and most of the other operators are currently only able to harness a slice of the <strong>3.4GHz<\/strong> radio spectrum band, which somewhat limits the amount of capacity available and that&#8217;s bad for data speeds. Once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has auctioned off more bands then operators will be able to combine those in order to potentially reach Gigabit performance (useless on a mobile but good for fixed wireless broadband to premises).<\/p>\n<p>The combination of these factors may help to explain why a speedtest conducted via a modern Samsung Galaxy phone in the train station was only able to peak at around <strong>325Mbps download<\/strong> and <strong>40Mbps upload<\/strong> (we&#8217;ve seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> go faster), which is despite the network itself having ample capacity from a 10Gbps fibre optic (backhaul) link.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"5G | The UK&amp;apos;s first 5G train station with Vodafone 5G #5Gamechanger | Vodafone UK\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sfe3GHmjKqk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Anne Sheehan, Director of Vodafone Business, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are delighted to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> to the West Midlands, giving businesses, residents and visitors fast and reliable connectivity even in exceptionally busy locations such as train stations and airports. 5G will enable new applications and experiences and support the development of connected cities and smart transport solutions.
