{"id":18417,"date":"2019-04-12T00:01:41","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T23:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=18417"},"modified":"2023-12-06T07:30:19","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T07:30:19","slug":"isp-zen-internet-sets-strong-future-uk-network-goals-for-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/04\/isp-zen-internet-sets-strong-future-uk-network-goals-for-2021.html","title":{"rendered":"ISP Zen Internet Sets Strong Future UK Network Goals for 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Broadband ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/zen_internet\" target=\"_blank\">Zen Internet<\/a> has revealed how they hope to unbundle a total of 700 exchanges from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> by 2021, which should enable their own network to cater for more than 80% of the UK with a total core capacity of 5Tbps (Terabits per second); before potentially rising to 987 exchanges by around 2025 (25Tbps core network).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present the Rochdale-based provider has already invested many millions into building their own network of local exchange PoPs (Points of Presence) \/ Ethernet nodes, which has given them more flexibility to offer a better range of products and prices to both small businesses and residential consumers alike.<\/p>\n<p>The result is that their own infrastructure now reaches <strong>400 exchanges<\/strong>, which is roughly akin to around 55% coverage for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> based &#8220;<em>fibre<\/em>&#8221; products (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> etc.). We should add that 275 of those exchanges can also offer <strong>Ethernet Access Direct<\/strong> (EAD) style services (note: the ISP&#8217;s two main core sites are located in London and Manchester).<\/p>\n<p>A further 50 or so exchanges are also about to be unbundled and that should take their coverage to over 65%, although the provider&#8217;s Lead Engineer, <strong>Richard Shaw<\/strong>, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uknof.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UKNOF<\/a> this week (<a href=\"https:\/\/indico.uknof.org.uk\/event\/46\/contributions\/676\/attachments\/900\/1111\/UKNOF_Presentation_April_2019.pptx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see slides<\/a>) that they still have a lot of areas to enhance (e.g. scaling can be difficult, as is mixing different traffic types and on the current network there&#8217;s no ability to use multiple backhauls from exchange to balance traffic etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Future upgrades and new network architecture are planned to tackle issues like those mentioned above, as well as the &#8220;<em>significant jump in core and aggregation bandwidth<\/em>&#8221; (inc. edge, transit and BNG capacity) that they expect to see over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2019-article-illustrations\/zens-network-goals-2025-uk.png\" alt=\"zens network goals 2025 uk\" width=\"100%\"><\/p>\n<p>Generally Zen, which is home to 126,000 UK broadband customers, has made no secret (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/08\/richard-tang-to-step-down-as-ceo-of-uk-isp-zen-internet.html\">here<\/a>) of their desire to become a \u00a3100m business within 3 years and a \u00a3250m one within 10 years. In keeping with that they recently revealed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/01\/isp-zen-internet-to-open-new-office-in-leeds-and-add-83-uk-jobs.html\">here<\/a>) their plan to add another <strong>83 jobs<\/strong> in the next year (as of Feb 2019 they employed about 490 staff and are opening a new office in Leeds).<\/p>\n<p>The company last reported an annual turnover of \u00a371m (up 11% on last year), with operating profit of \u00a33m (up 55%) and EBITDA of \u00a36m (up 19%) to the end of September 2018.
