This week saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bbc\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>&#8217;s famous consumer affairs TV show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006mg74\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Watchdog<\/strong><\/a>, take the ISP to task with a comical twist.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say that other ISPs, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a>, have also had a good number of similar adverts banned but none more so than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>. According to Watchdog, the operator has seen <strong>25 of its adverts banned<\/strong> over the last 18 months. So far VM has failed to learn from its mistakes and sometimes even repeats the same errors.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/emp\/embed\/smpEmbed.html?playlist=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fiplayer%2Fplaylist%2Fp00zlk4z&amp;title=Watchdog%3A%20Series%2030%3A%20Episode%205%3A%20Bye%20bye%20buffering%3F&amp;product=iplayer\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Sadly the ASA has <strong>no teeth to penalise repeat offenders<\/strong> and its bans often take effect sometime after the advert has been run. This means that for some firms it could be more profitable to take the risk of having their advert banned at a later date than to simply tame it down and thus potentially leave the product looking less attractive.<\/p>\n<p>The question is will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>, fearful of all the negative publicity and growing distrust of their advertising methods, now rein itself in. After all it\u2019s not a bad ISP and so shouldn\u2019t really need to resort to such methods.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A VirginMedia Spokesperson told Watchdog:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We recognise that we sometimes make mistakes and, when we do, we put our hands up and do everything we can to fix the problem. But the facts, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s reports consistently prove, are that Virgin Media offers the UK\u2019s fastest widely available broadband and we typically deliver the speeds we promise. This is one of the reasons why, again according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, we\u2019re one of the UK&#8217;s least complained about telecoms providers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We always work within advertising guidelines and clear all TV and radio ads before they\u2019re broadcast.
