{"id":1893,"date":"2012-10-18T10:42:34","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T09:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1893"},"modified":"2012-10-18T11:09:32","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T10:09:32","slug":"uk-4g-operators-setup-digital-mobile-spectrum-to-fix-freeview-tv-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/uk-4g-operators-setup-digital-mobile-spectrum-to-fix-freeview-tv-woes.html","title":{"rendered":"UK 4G Operators Setup Digital Mobile Spectrum Group to Fix Freeview TV Woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK&#8217;s primary Mobile Broadband operators have today setup a new company called <strong>Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited<\/strong> (formerly MitCo), which will work to ensure that <strong>900,000 UK homes<\/strong> don&#8217;t lose <strong>Freeview Digital TV<\/strong> (DTV) services when the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE) products, via the <strong>800MHz<\/strong> band, arrive next year.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Under the plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (Orange UK, T-Mobile), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> will contribute towards an <strong>\u00a3180m<\/strong> pot of cash that will then go towards tackling any interference created by the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> services. Any other operator that bids for a slice of the 800MHz band will also be expected to join the new group.<\/p>\n<p>The governments Communications Minister, <strong>Ed Vaizey MP<\/strong>, revealed in July 2012 that &#8220;<em>around 2.3 million households could be affected<\/em>&#8221; by interference from the 800MHz band, which was previously used for analogue TV and now sits right next to the current <strong>700MHz<\/strong> based Digital TV services. Sadly only 900,000 will actually receive financial support because they are &#8220;<em>likely to rely<\/em>&#8221; on digital terrestrial TV services &#8220;<em>for their primary viewing<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Maria Miller, Culture Secretary, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The roll-out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> is a huge step forward for mobile broadband services in the UK, and will be incredibly important in driving economic growth. I am pleased that the mobile operators will be working together to ensure that no viewers lose their television services when 4G is rolled out, and congratulate them on setting up the assistance scheme so quickly<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Ed Richards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s CEO, added:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This is further evidence of the progress that is being made by the industry, guided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, to deliver 4G mobile services across the UK. The 4G auction is already on track to begin at the end of the year and the creation of Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited ahead of time represents yet another step towards bringing consumers early access to the next generation of mobile broadband services<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Eligible households will receive vouchers that can be used to cover the cost of a <strong>special filter<\/strong>, which in &#8220;<em>most<\/em>&#8221; cases can simply be attached to a TV receiver in the living room. Other situations may require an <strong>engineer visit<\/strong> to fix the filter onto your rooftop aerial or help those with special needs (disabled).<\/p>\n<p>In cases where this doesn&#8217;t work the money will instead be used to fund <strong>platform changes<\/strong>, such as allowing the household to adapt a cable or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> based TV service instead of the normal terrestrial one.
