Hampshire-based UK ISP Onestream<\/a> has launched an intriguing new broadband package called “Jetstream Lite Fibre Unlimited<\/em><\/a>,” which is unique because it appears to be based off Openreach<\/a>’s (BT<\/a>) national Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC<\/a> \/ VDSL) network and yet only promises a max download speed of 20Mbps (2Mbps upload).<\/p>\n

At present the slowest FTTC<\/a> tiers that ISPs can purchase from Openreach<\/a> at wholesale are 40\/2 and 40\/10 (40Mbps download and 2Mbps or 10Mbps upload). The operator did previously sell an 18Mbps tier but that was only brief to support trials of their now shelved Long Reach VDSL (LRVDSL) technology. Out of the two 40Mbps tiers the one with a 10Mbps upload speed is conversely the cheapest due to Ofcom<\/a>’s price control.<\/p>\n

In short Onestream<\/a>’s 20Mbps package (17Mbps average speeds) is faster than their 11Mbps ADSL2+ based service but slower than the traditional FTTC<\/a> tiers that we normally see. We assume they’re merely capping the top speed of Openreach<\/a>’s 40\/2 or 40\/10 tiers in order to offer a cheaper service (via their wholesale suppliers at TalkTalk<\/a> or Vodafone<\/a>), although it’s still a bit of an odd but interesting proposition.<\/p>\n

Otherwise new customers can expect to receive unlimited usage, an included “super dooper<\/em>” wireless router (\u00a39.99 for delivery), included phone line rental (standard call rates) and a 12 month contract term.<\/p>\n
