{"id":18975,"date":"2019-07-08T17:20:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T16:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=18975"},"modified":"2019-07-08T17:27:02","modified_gmt":"2019-07-08T16:27:02","slug":"b4rn-celebrate-after-raising-3m-for-rural-gigabit-ftth-rollout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/07\/b4rn-celebrate-after-raising-3m-for-rural-gigabit-ftth-rollout.html","title":{"rendered":"B4RN Celebrate After Raising \u00a33m for Rural Gigabit FTTH Rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rural focused UK ISP <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-49 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"Broadband 4 the Rural North\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/b4rn.org.uk\">B4RN<\/a> (Broadband for the Rural North) has successfully hit their \u00a33 million crowdfunding target via Triodos Bank (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.triodoscrowdfunding.co.uk\/invest\/broadband-for-the-rural-north\">here<\/a>), which will help to support the on-going rollout of a community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-122 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ftth\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_fibre_optic.php\">FTTH<\/a>) broadband network across remote parts of several counties.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As a community benefit society (i.e. <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-49 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"Broadband 4 the Rural North\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/b4rn.org.uk\">B4RN<\/a> can&#8217;t be bought by a commercial operator and any profits are distributed back into the community) they have so far deployed over 3,000km of fibre optic cable across rural parts of Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Yorkshire. Overall B4RN has connected around 6,000 homes (live customers) and the new funding may enable them to reach 20,000 over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with this the operator has been busy making good use of the Government&#8217;s \u00a367m business connectivity orientated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/02\/3660-gigabit-broadband-connections-created-by-uk-gov-vouchers.html\">Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme<\/a> (GBVS) and its new residential focused \u00a3200m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/05\/200m-uk-rural-gigabit-broadband-connectivity-programme-starts.html\">Rural Gigabit Connectivity<\/a> (RGC) programme, although this has required them to quickly ramp-up their operations (i.e. if they don&#8217;t then the schemes could expire before they&#8217;re able to complete all of the planned work).<\/p>\n<p>The challenge in all of this is that building &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; networks remains an inherently slow process, particularly when dealing with community efforts and organising volunteers. Meanwhile many of their builds require the vouchers to be aggregated and that means B4RN has to get lots of Aggregated Pre Registered Packages (APRP) approved, usually before they can start encouraging local people to sign-up for vouchers (this takes a long time).<\/p>\n<p>Sadly the vouchers only get paid AFTER the property is connected and live, which of course leaves B4RN to fund the build cost until that stage is completed and this is where the crowdfunding raise will be able to do the most good (i.e. giving them enough funding to get moving without having to wait around for the admin side).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We are in a different world to the one we used to inhabit, it\u2019s no longer a question of money but instead it\u2019s about delivery<\/em>,&#8221; said Barry to ISPreview.co.uk during May 2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/05\/b4rn-to-hit-6000-rural-ftth-broadband-customers-and-raises-2m.html\">here<\/a>). The \u00a33m announcement was actually made last week (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.triodoscrowdfunding.co.uk\/news\/b4rn-bond-goes-above-and-beyond\">here<\/a>) but for some reason B4RN didn&#8217;t let us know, although credits to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbroadband.com\/news\/8466-b4rn-breaks-the-3-million-mark-for-its-triodos-crowdfunding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thinkbroadband<\/a> for spotting it.<\/p>\n<p>The funding drive remains open and there&#8217;s a possible maximum capital raise of \u00a35 million. It will be interesting to see how close B4RN can get to that figure.
