Choosing the right broadband ISP for your needs isn’t easy, especially in the United Kingdom’s aggressively competitive market that bombards consumers with a confusing array of different options and where performance varies based on a multitude of often opaque factors. So here’s our editors pick for 2013<\/strong>, which we hope will make your life a little easier.<\/p>\n

ISPreview.co.uk has looked back at the performance of ISPs throughout the past year, irrespective of scale, and concluded a selection based on a balance of reliability, affordability and performance. This list represents a shortlist of personal editor choices<\/strong>, using our own experiences of observing the market, and as a result selection should not be considered an award.<\/p>\n

To make life simpler we’ve grouped our choices into two unordered primary categories. The first focuses on ISPs that offer a balance of price and performance, while the second is more quality orientated; unlike big price comparison sites we also include smaller providers.<\/p>\n

We usually only pick ISPs that have either been listed on our site for several years or which show a strong degree of persistent reliability<\/strong> (i.e. the ‘Quality’ choices). On top of that we have also written a useful guide to help you understand the market (just in case\u00a0you don’t already).<\/p>\n

Best UK Consumer ISPs – Balance of Price and Performance<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

There are plenty of affordable ISP solutions around but most of them seem to sacrifice service quality for a lower price point, which can result in inferior support and slow speeds. Paying less is not always a good idea but if you have to and still require a good balance of performance then the following tend to fit that bill.<\/p>\n

Sky Broadband<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Ofcom<\/a>\u2019s Q3-2012 data, Sky\u2019s fixed line broadband service receives the fewest customer complaints out of the biggest five ISPs. Sky also has strong financial backing, is very affordable and offers one of the strongest TV packages on the market that can also be bundled with an entry-level FREE broadband service (2GB usage allowance).<\/p>\n

Prices for the main Sky Broadband<\/a> Unlimited package start at just \u00a37.50 to \u00a310\u00a0a month, which includes \u201ctruly unlimited usage<\/em>\u201d, typical download speeds of 14Mbps, free UK weekend phone calls, a free SkyHub wireless router and free wifi<\/a> hotspot access via The Cloud. However Sky Line Rental must also be taken from \u00a314.50 a month.<\/p>\n

On top of that those wanting a superfast broadband (FTTC<\/a>) service can take the Sky Fibre<\/a> Unlimited package, which includes all of the above but with download speeds of up to 38Mbps (an even faster Pro service is also available) from \u00a320 a month.<\/p>\n

Sadly if you don\u2019t live within Sky\u2019s unbundled (LLU) network (covers around 85% of the UK) then the BT<\/a>-based Sky Broadband<\/a> Connect service is your only option and this is best avoided. It\u2019s restrictive, more likely to suffer from\u00a0problems and is also fairly expensive. Most of the gripes against Sky relate to this package.<\/p>\n

PlusNet<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

PlusNet<\/a> has won several separate awards for customer service and support this year, which is an impressive feat for one of the markets cheapest providers. You can’t necessarily expect the best speeds or quality but they have built a good reputation for budget services and even offer an affordable selection of FTTC<\/a> based superfast broadband packages (from \u00a315.99 a month), which deliver speeds from 38Mbps and faster.<\/p>\n

Prices start at just \u00a35.99 a month for their budget broadband package, which includes a 10GB usage allowance (unlimited overnight usage), free wireless router, free connection and 12 month contract (shorter contract options available). A Home Phone (line rental) service with various free call options can also be bundled from \u00a310.49 extra a month (cheaper bundle deals are often offered).<\/p>\n

Virgin Media<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Virgin Media<\/a> uses a unique hybrid cable coax and fibre optic (EuroDOCSIS3) network, with some copper, to deliver a variety of phone, TV, broadband and also mobile services. It claims to offer some of the fastest and most reliable broadband speeds of any ISP (up to a staggering 120Mbps) but its service can only reach half of the country.<\/p>\n

The strength of virgin’s cable service, moderate prices and popular TV bundles are the primary reason for our including them. But Virgin is by no means perfect. Those living outside of its cable coverage are only able to take their inferior ‘Virgin National’ (Virgin.net ADSL<\/a>) packages, which use BT<\/a>’s older copper lines and aren’t well rated for performance. Virgin’s customer support quality could also do with some improvement.<\/p>\n

Prices for broadband start at around \u00a314.50 per month for a superfast 30Mbps cable service with unlimited usage (Traffic Management) and a free wireless router, which applies when taken alongside Virgin phone line rental (unlimited weekend calls) for an extra \u00a314.99 a month. Various other bundles are also offered, often at significantly discounted prices.<\/p>\n

NOTE: In the last\u00a02-3 months of 2012 Virgin’s cable platform has suffered a lot of sporadic video buffering, peering and related high\u00a0latency problems. Not enough to impact their inclusion this year but next year’s report could be different.<\/p>\n

BTInfinity<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

BT<\/a>\u2019s standard broadband packages typically receive a lot of complaints, which is often\u00a0due to the operators stiff Traffic Management policy (can hit the performance of P2P based and online video streaming services quite hard). Support isn\u2019t the best either but they do offer a strong range of additional services, such as unlimited public wifi<\/a> access, a free router, free connection and 5GB of free online storage.<\/p>\n

But the operators new FTTC<\/a> based superfast broadband service, BTInfinity<\/a>, especially its \u201cunlimited\u201d package, is significantly better and actually deserves some praise for being able to deliver typical download speeds of up to 38Mbps and good service flexibility. Prices for this tend to start at just \u00a318 a month (or \u00a326 for the unlimited 76Mbps package) and usually includes free UK evening and weekend calls (cheaper discounts are often offered).<\/p>\n

On top of that BT now has quite a strong TV solution that can be bundled with its broadband and phone deals. This is powered by the YouView<\/a> (IPTV) platform and appears to be quite well priced vs similar offers from Sky and Virgin. Line Rental is also required for BT\u2019s bundles and costs from around \u00a310.75 a month.<\/p>\n

People who work from home, small businesses and those seeking stronger reliability in general often have to consider paying extra for higher quality. Here\u2019s our pick of several highly reliable ISPs that have a tendency to place quality, support and service above price. We use an approximate price point of \u00a325 as a benchmark for each of the ISPs listed below.<\/p>\n

Zen Internet<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Zen continues to be our pick for the longest standing and most well recognised of all the small and medium sized ISPs. Zen remains highly rated among visitors to our website (Zen’s Reviews<\/a>), has picked up plenty of awards from other organisations and we have never known them to suffer any truly major problems. They also offer phone services and bundles.<\/p>\n

But quality comes at a price and as a result Zen’s packages start at \u00a318.37 per month (16Mbps typical speed and 20 GigaBytes of usage), though \u00a325.52 will get you a respectable 100GB. Readers should take note of the included services too, with highlights including a 1 month minimum contract, anti-virus filtering, POP3 email and 2GB of web space. They also offer range of superfast broadband services (FTTC and FTTP<\/a>) from \u00a327.60.\u00a0Phone and broadband bundles can also be found on this website.<\/p>\n

AAISP (Andrews and Arnold) is a small and technically niche ISP that is best targeted towards businesses, home workers and those familiar with telecoms jargon. But this is not a weakness (AAISP Reviews<\/a>), AAISP offers strong reliability and extremely knowledgeable support staff but its packages can be harder for the layman to understand. However they have recently launched a new package for home users that is a lot easier to understand (Home::1).<\/p>\n

Prices\u00a0tend to start at around \u00a325 per month for standard broadband service with a 50GB usage allowance. Native IPv6 support and a free router are some of the highlights. Superfast broadband services (FTTC and FTTP<\/a>) are also available from an extra \u00a310, not to mention the usual\u00a0phone \/voice call\u00a0line solutions.<\/p>\n

Prices start at \u00a317.35 per month for a 24Mbps capable service with a 5GB usage allowance (unlimited overnight usage), although paying just a little more (\u00a317.99) will get you a 16Mbps LLU service with “unmetered” usage. All packages include a static IP, email anti-virus\/spam, webspace and a 1 month contract term.<\/p>\n

Sadly IDNet<\/a> doesn\u2019t put much effort into promoting itself and recently revamped their website with a more tablet friendly design and a greater focus on business users. But it still remains a generally strong and reliable ISP for home users too (IDNet Reviews<\/a>), provided you don\u2019t mind paying extra (they use to be cheaper).<\/p>\n

Prices start at \u00a319.80 inc. VAT per month (up to 20Mbps speed, 25GB usage), though \u00a325.80 will get you a monthly data usage allowance of 100GB. All packages come with anti-virus\/spam filtering, static IP, native IPv6 and a 1 month contract. A range of superfast broadband packages also start from \u00a327 (25GB usage) and phone services are similarly available.<\/p>\n

Prices start at just \u00a310 per month for a bog standard up to 24Mbps package with a 4GB usage allowance and \u00a325 will get you an unlimited (LLU) service. The ISP also offers a nice mix of superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP<\/a>) packages, with prices starting from \u00a320 for a 10GB usage allowance (plus 50GB off-peak). ICUK includes a lot of extras like email, anti-virus\/spam filtering, static IPv6 addresses and more.<\/p>\n

We always attempt to pick ISPs that have shown fairly consistent performance and reliability over the past 12 months but there is no such thing as perfection and experiences do differ, especially with broadband being a shared \u201cbest efforts<\/em>\u201d service. Often even poorly rated ISPs can deliver an excellent service; although the ratio of dissatisfied customers to satisfied ones will be higher (i.e. you stand more chance of getting burnt).<\/p>\n

It’s important to remember that ISP service quality can vary from location to location and is affected by many different factors, such as the length of your phone line, local capacity at the telephone exchange and the type of line itself (i.e. copper, aluminium, fibre optic or coax etc). Many of these factors will be out of the ISPs ability to control.<\/p>\n
