{"id":19030,"date":"2019-07-16T13:59:51","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T12:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=19030"},"modified":"2019-07-16T14:01:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T13:01:11","slug":"glasgow-and-london-underground-may-trial-5g-infotainment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/07\/glasgow-and-london-underground-may-trial-5g-infotainment.html","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow and London Underground May Trial 5G Infotainment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A joint \u00a32.4m UK project with South Korea looks set to trial how ultrafast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> wireless data connections could be used to support &#8220;<em>uninterrupted infotainment services<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. travel services, entertainment and advertising) for commuters travelling around the Glasgow Metro, as well as possibly the London Underground.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The project &#8211; due to run from August 2019 to March 2021 &#8211; is part of a private and public sector consortium called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> RailNext, which is being led by Cisco and various other organisations (e.g. British SMEs Soluis and Ampletime, the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow City Council).<\/p>\n<p>Apparently this it will aim to deliver Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) content &#8211; including travel information, video streaming and gaming &#8211; through wearable devices such as headsets. All of this forms part of the Government&#8217;s wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/06\/gov-to-simplify-5g-planning-process-and-put-40m-into-new-uk-trials.html\">5G Testbeds and Trials<\/a> (5GTT) programme.<\/p>\n<p>The first live deployment of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> based mobile infotainment service into a subway environment is due to take place across the Seoul Metro system in South Korea, although this will be followed by a similar trial with the Glasgow Metro. Assuming all goes well then there are plans to explore a similar rollout on the London Underground and New York Metro.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Margot James MP, Digital Minister, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;5G is the future of connectivity and we want the UK to be a world leader. This collaboration with South Korea will explore innovative ways to use the technology to deliver content and services on transport networks in Seoul and Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m delighted that this will create new partnership and business opportunities for UK SMEs, academia and local government.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The government has also posted a general update on the status of various projects in their 5GTT programme (<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/815755\/July_2019_-_5GTT_Programme_Update_Publication_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>), which amongst other things notes that the <strong>Rural Connected Communities<\/strong> (RCC) project should get moving this summer with a competition.<\/p>\n<p>The RCC aims to &#8220;<em>promote demand for services from consumers, enterprises and the public sector in rural areas and will also explore how \u201dneutral host\u201d infrastructure sharing and spectrum sharing can be used to improve the incentives to invest<\/em>.&#8221; A range of 5G-enabled technical solutions and commercial models are expected to be tested.<\/p>\n<p>Mind the gap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A joint \u00a32.4m UK project with South Korea looks set to trial how ultrafast 5G wireless data connections could be used to support &#8220;uninterrupted infotainment services&#8221; (i.e. travel services, entertainment and advertising) for commuters travelling around the Glasgow Metro, as well as possibly the London Underground.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[406,60,38,78],"class_list":["post-19030","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-5g","tag-mobile-broadband","tag-politics","tag-trains"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
