{"id":19103,"date":"2019-07-23T16:03:33","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T15:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=19103"},"modified":"2019-07-23T16:03:33","modified_gmt":"2019-07-23T15:03:33","slug":"global-fixed-broadband-subs-total-1-047-billion-as-fibre-dominates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/07\/global-fixed-broadband-subs-total-1-047-billion-as-fibre-dominates.html","title":{"rendered":"Global Fixed Broadband Subs Total 1.047 Billion as Fibre Dominates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new report has revealed that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.06% (+21.2 million) during Q1 2019 to total 1.047 billion, while older pure copper line ISP connections continued to decline in the face of a rising onslaught from faster fibre optic based connections.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> notes that pure copper broadband connections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> etc.) fell by another -8.9% in the past year alone, while every other technology saw growth. For example, full fibre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>\/P) networks surged by 22%, while fixed wireless networks jumped 17.9%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">Satellite<\/a> services grew 8.5%, Cable networks (HFC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/docsis\">DOCSIS<\/a> platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>) increased by 4.4% and hybrid fibre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) networks saw a smaller rise of just 2.4%.<\/p>\n<p>As usual China is still the largest market for &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; growth by far and saw an annual increase of 23%. On top of that they also accounted for 72% of global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> net adds in the last quarter alone, although the latter figure is down from 82% some six months ago (Q3 2018). Argentina, Thailand, Philippines, Chile and South Africa among others also saw significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> quarterly growth rates of 53%, 34%, 26%, 20% and 17% respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Given the above it won&#8217;t come as much of a surprise to learn that over 65% of all net additions in fixed broadband subscribers came from East Asia, which also maintained the largest regional market share of all subscribers at 47%. Sadly we don&#8217;t get any figures for the UK this time around but we can at least see how the technology share has changed across different regions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2019-uk-internet-statistics\/point_topic_q1_2019_broadband_statistics.png\" alt=\"point topic q1 2019 broadband statistics\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We suspect that if the UK had been mentioned then it would continue to have a much improved FTTH growth rate, which has been reflected in several other studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/05\/ofcom-uk-finds-full-fibre-broadband-available-to-7-of-uk-premises.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/03\/uk-finally-joins-2019-ftth-ultrafast-broadband-country-ranking.html\">here<\/a>).
