Mobile network operator EE<\/a> UK (BT<\/a>) has today added the option of two new “Swappable Benefits<\/em>” – Amazon<\/a> Prime Video (\u00a35.99 per month) and Gamer’s Data Pass (\u00a37.99 per month) – to their 4G<\/a> and 5G<\/a> based Pay Month Smart Plans. Such plans usually give you a choice of several included benefits, but you can also add more at cost.<\/p>\n

The add-ons allow you to use related services as much as you like and all without gobbling up your mobile data (mobile broadband) usage allowance. At this point some readers may note that you can already get Amazon<\/a> Prime Video as part of EE<\/a>’s existing Video Data Pass<\/strong>, although this costs a few pounds more (\u00a38.99) because it also covers Netflix, YouTube, BBC<\/a> iPlayer and BT<\/a> Sport based video streaming.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the Gamer’s Data Pass<\/strong> is said to cover all of a customer’s mobile data use on gaming apps such as Pok\u00e9mon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, FIFA Mobile, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, as well as when streaming on Twitch, all with inclusive data on EE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Edward Goff, Marketing Director at EE, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Our Smart Plans have been a real hit with our 4G<\/a> and 5G<\/a> customers \u2013 providing them with the most flexible and personal mobile plans in the UK. Now we\u2019re making these plans even better by working with a number of the world\u2019s best entertainment providers to ensure customers can enjoy the content they love in more places when on the move.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, we suspect the gamer’s pass could cause some confusion because multiplayer gaming itself doesn’t actually consume much data and yet that is what the pass covers, specific to the above apps. Instead what normally sucks the most data is having to download new patches or the game itself, which isn’t covered.<\/p>\n

Likewise some may incorrectly assume that this covers all games, including those on platforms like Steam, XBox Live and related downloads, but we get the impression that it’s only focused on usage for mobile games\/apps that you’ve already installed (specifically those listed above). As such we fear there’s a risk that some people may be hit by unexpected charges for data use.<\/p>\n

In addition to Swappables, EE Smart Plans feature Upgrade Anytime, allowing customers to upgrade their handsets whenever they want and switch to the latest smartphone models before the end of their contract. Those on a select pay monthly Smart Plan bought directly from EE will also benefit from new EE Service Packs at no extra charge, including a customer handset lifetime guarantee and annual device and account MOT, helping to keep customers\u2019 smartphones in tip-top condition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
