A new survey of 2,000 UK consumers, which was conducted by ISP Zen Internet<\/a>, has claimed that almost one in five broadband users in Southampton (20%) and Glasgow (18%) are “fed up<\/em>” with their ISP. As usual nearly half of the respondents in Southampton (47%) and Glasgow (46%) cited slow speeds, with reliability close behind.<\/p>\n

The limited sample size of Zen’s survey obviously means we won’t get a full picture of every UK city, although it does help to indicate what people look for in an ISP and how this differs between areas. For example, 77% of respondents in Liverpool look for a good broadband speed, which compares with Southampton (75%) and Manchester (73%). Meanwhile reliability is a top consideration in Nottingham (77%), Plymouth (76%) and Brighton (76%).<\/p>\n

The data also reveals the UK cities with the greatest appetite for surfing the web, at least among respondents. Overall Bristol is the most “internet-hungry city<\/em>” in the UK, with an average of 9.9 hours spent online per day, which is closely followed by Sheffield (9.8 hours) and Manchester (9.6 hours). In Sheffield it’s noted that 17% of households were found to spend over 21 hours online per day.<\/p>\n

Bristol was also found to have the highest number of connected devices in each household (an average of 6), with 7% of the city having 21+ connected devices in their home.<\/p>\n

Richard Tang, Founder and Chairman of Zen, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“UK consumers are too often let down by slow speeds and poor reliability \u2013 with too many providers falling short of expectations. Sluggish or unreliable internet service is damaging to both productivity and satisfaction and must be addressed urgently by the industry.<\/p>\n

People are spending increasing amounts of time online and having access to a speedy and reliable broadband service should be a given.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Obviously Zen Internet<\/a> has a vested interest in selling themselves as the better quality alternative here and in fairness they do rate very highly. Nevertheless a bigger survey with full results would have been much more useful as we only get the highlights from a few selected cities, which doesn’t tell us much about the wider UK picture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
