Ofcom<\/a> has published their Spring 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre<\/em>” (FTTP<\/a>) coverage has risen to 12% (up from 10% in September 2019) and the number of premises unable to get 10Mbps+ remains at 2% (608,000 premises). Geographic 4G<\/a> coverage is now 67% (up from 66%).<\/p>\n

Crucially we should point out that today’s report is actually based on coverage and service availability information received from ISPs and mobile network operators as of January 2020, which is thus four months more current than the September 2019 data in their previous update (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> The Government’s original definition of “superfast broadband<\/em>” is 24Mbps+, which is now close to 97% coverage.<\/div>\n

Otherwise, “ultrafast broadband<\/em>” availability (defined by the regulator as 300Mbps+<\/strong>) has increased from 53% to 55% of UK homes and businesses since the last update, while “superfast broadband<\/em>” (30Mbps+<\/strong>) coverage remains unchanged on 95%. On top of that it’s noted how 3.5 million (12%) premises can now order a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP<\/a>) service, which is up from 3m in the last update.<\/p>\n

At present most of the growth in ultrafast connectivity comes from the expansion of Virgin Media<\/a>’s hybrid cable and full fibre network, although Openreach<\/a> has also been deploying both G.fast<\/a> and FTTP<\/a> technology. Similarly lots of alternative network ISPs are helping to spread FTTP at an increasingly rapid pace (Summary of Full Fibre Builds<\/strong><\/a>), with Cityfibre<\/a> and Hyperoptic<\/a> being two of the biggest movers.<\/p>\n

We should add that Virgin Media<\/a>’s upgrade to DOCSIS<\/a> 3.1 technology has also made their network capable of 1Gbps+ speeds and future 5G<\/a> fixed wireless networks may be able to achieve the same, provided enough spectrum and capacity exists to support them.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> In order to meet Boris Johnson’s original nationwide “full fibre<\/em>” ambition for 2025 we’d need to see the UK adding c.4-5 million premises a year, but they’ve since downgraded this target to include other “gigabit<\/em>” capable technologies (here<\/a>).<\/div>\n

The improved fixed line broadband coverage also means the number of premises that cannot get a “decent broadband<\/em>” (10Mbps+<\/strong>) service is just 2% or 608,000 (almost unchanged from 610,000 in the last update). A download speed of at least 10Mbps and an upload of 1Mbps also represents the specification for the UK Government’s imminent broadband Universal Service Obligation<\/strong><\/a> (USO), which began in March 2020.<\/p>\n

Take note that if we include 4G<\/a> into the mix for USO delivery then the gap drops from 608,000 to just 189,000 premises. Speaking of which, 4G<\/a> mobile networks have seen outdoor coverage by all operators (EE<\/a>, Three UK<\/a>, O2<\/a> and Vodafone<\/a> combined) hold steady at 97%, while geographic coverage from all operators is 67% (up from 66%) over the same period.<\/p>\n
