{"id":1970,"date":"2012-10-31T08:03:58","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T08:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1970"},"modified":"2012-10-31T09:20:44","modified_gmt":"2012-10-31T09:20:44","slug":"fluidata-isp-boss-criticises-ee-for-underwhelming-4g-speeds-and-data-caps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/fluidata-isp-boss-criticises-ee-for-underwhelming-4g-speeds-and-data-caps.html","title":{"rendered":"Fluidata ISP Boss Criticises EE for Underwhelming 4G Speeds and Data Caps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The boss of UK business ISP Fluidata, <strong>Piers Daniell<\/strong>, has said that he is \u201c<em>somewhat underwhelmed<\/em>\u201d by the lower than hoped for Mobile Broadband speeds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE) service and expressed similar disappointment about its low and \u201c<em>misjudged<\/em>\u201d usage allowances.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new service, which set out its <strong>comparatively high prices<\/strong> last week and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/ee-reveals-prices-for-its-new-uk-4g-mobile-and-fttc-fibre-broadband-service.html\" target=\"_blank\">went live in several UK cities on Tuesday<\/a>, promised a range of packages with data allowances of between 500MB (MegaBytes) to 8GB (GigaBytes). Mobile internet speeds of fairly modest proportions were also touted, which left many to question whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> was really worth it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Piers Daniell, Managing Director, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>So with the announcement that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> now has a commercial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> service live I am somewhat underwhelmed with what they have launched. Not only have they misjudged the data allowances providing packages of 500 MB to 8 GB, or charged a lot more for the privilege they have also only delivered on average 8 \u2013 12 Mb\/s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Now this may seem like a good improvement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> technology but with that capable of delivering 7 Mb\/s , albeit it in perfect conditions, I am just not that overwhelmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>\u2019s claims of 12 Mb\/s. Especially when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>\u2019s own trials in London was regularly demonstrating over 30 Mb\/s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The issue of course that has hit the headlines is the low levels of data allowance. While this would be plenty with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> service I think people\u2019s expectations is that they can do more with the 4G service like watch TV which will quickly eat up the available allowance. I know for example that on the 4G trial with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> the firmware update for the dongle, which was required to use the service, was nearly 100MB on its own<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Daniell admits that being the first to market with a new service\u00a0isn&#8217;t easy (assuming we exclude UKBroadband&#8217;s fixed wireless LTE solutions) and suspects that anybody whom had hoped to give up their fixed line connection to go down the path of 4G might instead need to <strong>wait for more competition<\/strong> to emerge in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In fairness nobody should be expecting wonders from the first iteration of commercial 4G services, which we\u2019ve long said would initially only deliver modest speeds and likely at a higher price point. But we do agree with Daniell that more <strong>flexible data usage allowances<\/strong> were one of the biggest of EE\u2019s expectations and thus became a missed opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Next year should see the situation improve as several operators are expected to begin launching 4G services via the new<strong> 800MHz<\/strong> and <strong>2.6GHz<\/strong> bands.
