Arqiva&#8217;s existing concession agreements with local authorities for the use of street furniture (often used for the installation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> small cells) are also understood to be included.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> fears that the sale would make Cellnex too dominant, not least because there would no longer be any competition from Arqiva when negotiating future access to cellular sites. This in turn could lead to higher prices as Cellnex would have no incentive to offer a more attractive deal.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> said (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2019\/10\/27\/three-sounds-alarm-5g-mast-monopoly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Telegraph<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The proposed acquisition of Arqiva\u2019s telecoms business by Cellnex threatens to hinder the UK\u2019s position in the global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> race giving Cellnex control of over 80pc of independent mobile sites in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when operators are focused on deploying 5G as quickly as possible, the creation of a new monopoly may increase the costs of rollout, reducing investment in the UK\u2019s digital infrastructure, negatively impacting consumers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The operator has now called on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to probe the sale and we will be keeping an eye out to see if there is a response.
