{"id":19940,"date":"2019-11-06T10:48:18","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T10:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=19940"},"modified":"2019-11-06T10:49:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T10:49:48","slug":"ofcom-uk-appoints-temporary-ceo-to-replace-sharon-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/11\/ofcom-uk-appoints-temporary-ceo-to-replace-sharon-white.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom UK Appoints Temporary CEO to Replace Sharon White"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK broadband, media and communications regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, has today announced that their Group Director of Competition, Jonathan Oxley, will be appointed as an &#8220;<em>interim<\/em>&#8221; CEO while the longer than expected hunt continues to find a replacement for outgoing boss Sharon White, who leaves at the end of this month.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sharon formally announced her intention to step down from the challenging role in June (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/06\/ofcom-uk-ceo-sharon-white-to-exit-telecoms-and-media-regulator.html\">here<\/a>). The plan had been to appoint a replacement by &#8220;<em>around the turn of the year<\/em>,&#8221; although so far they&#8217;ve yet to find a permanent replacement and that hunt is thus on-going.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile it&#8217;s noted that Jonathan himself did not in fact apply for the role of CEO but, given his existing experience with the regulator, he does seem to be a good interim fit and is quoted as being &#8220;<em>delighted<\/em>&#8221; with the Board&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Lord Burns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> Chairman, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jonathan is extremely well equipped to step up to provide important continuity for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> and the sectors it regulates.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During White&#8217;s period in power she oversaw a number of major industry developments, such as the strategic review of digital communications that resulted in the further legal separation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>, as well as the merger of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> and conversely the stark &#8211; some would say controversial &#8211; rejection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>&#8217;s proposed merger.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that she has tried to encourage more &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; deployments, overseen numerous disagreements between mobile network operators, designed a new broadband USO and helped to introduce a variety of new consumer protection measures (e.g. easier mobile switching, automatic compensation for broadband ISP faults, end-of-contract notifications etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Being the boss of a large regulator like Ofcom is anything but easy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK broadband, media and communications regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that their Group Director of Competition, Jonathan Oxley, will be appointed as an &#8220;interim&#8221; CEO while the longer than expected hunt continues to find a replacement for outgoing boss Sharon White, who leaves at the end of this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":19942,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[36,38],"class_list":["post-19940","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-ofcom-regulation","tag-politics"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
