{"id":2021,"date":"2012-11-05T12:18:44","date_gmt":"2012-11-05T12:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2021"},"modified":"2012-11-05T12:18:44","modified_gmt":"2012-11-05T12:18:44","slug":"europe-to-open-the-2ghz-band-for-superfast-4g-lte-mobile-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/11\/europe-to-open-the-2ghz-band-for-superfast-4g-lte-mobile-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"Europe to Open the 2GHz Band for Superfast 4G LTE Mobile Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission (EC) has called upon all EU member states, including the United Kingdom, to open up the <strong>2GHz<\/strong> radio spectrum band (1920-1980MHz paired with 2110-2170MHz) for use by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE) superfast mobile broadband services by <strong>30th June 2014<\/strong> &#8220;<em>at the latest<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present all of the UK&#8217;s primary mobile operators hold paired 2 x 10.0MHz blocks of the related <strong>2100MHz<\/strong> spectrum, which is currently used for the provision of slower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> (UMTS, HSPA etc.) based Mobile Broadband services; although both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> (2 x 14.8MHz) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> (2 x 14.6MHz) retain a slightly larger slice than their rivals.<\/p>\n<p>The EU&#8217;s <strong>harmonised liberalisation<\/strong> of the 2GHz band will make it <strong>mandatory<\/strong> for member states to ensure that 1920-1980MHz paired with 2110-2170MHz is now also available for use by the new generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> services. The fact that all of the major operators already own a reasonable slice of this spectrum should limit any of the usual legal disagreements that can often arise from such changes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Neelie Kroes, EC Vice President, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This extra spectrum for 4G in Europe means we can better meet the changing and growing demand for broadband. I want to see Member States acting swiftly to change existing licenses. We all win from faster wireless connections in Europe<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The EC claims that &#8220;<em>these technologies are increasingly capable of offering 30Mbps [Megabits per second] to many users at the same time<\/em>&#8221; and can do so at a &#8220;<em>competitive price<\/em>&#8220;.
