{"id":20554,"date":"2019-12-23T15:06:17","date_gmt":"2019-12-23T15:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=20554"},"modified":"2019-12-23T15:07:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-23T15:07:47","slug":"ee-uk-joins-4g-mobile-pilot-on-the-london-underground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/12\/ee-uk-joins-4g-mobile-pilot-on-the-london-underground.html","title":{"rendered":"EE UK Joins 4G Mobile Pilot on the London Underground Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) has today announced that they will next year be joining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tfl.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Transport for London<\/a> (TfL) to help pilot a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The TfL project was first officially announced in July 2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/07\/tfl-4g-mobile-to-cover-whole-of-london-underground-by-mid-2020s.html\">here<\/a>) and aims to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> services available across the whole of their <strong>London Underground<\/strong> (tube trains) network by the &#8220;<em>mid-2020s<\/em>&#8220;, although initially this will only take the form of a limited pilot along the <strong>Jubilee Line<\/strong> between Canning Town and Westminster stations (once the bugs have been worked out they&#8217;ll extend it).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time hundreds of miles of new fibre optic cabling will also be installed alongside, which is part of a range of measures from London Mayor Sadiq Khan to boost digital connectivity across the capital (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/10\/mayor-to-spread-full-fibre-over-london-by-going-down-the-tube.html\">here<\/a>). The pilot is due to begin in <strong>March 2020<\/strong> and procurement for a concessionaire agreement to facilitate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> connectivity across the whole of the underground network could be ready by <strong>Summer 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Marc Allera, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s Consumer Division, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are delighted to formally join the TfL 4G on the Underground trial, connecting our customers between Westminster and Canning Town.
