{"id":2111,"date":"2012-11-16T08:09:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-16T08:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2111"},"modified":"2012-11-16T08:12:28","modified_gmt":"2012-11-16T08:12:28","slug":"briton-ferry-residents-vent-anger-at-new-bt-superfast-broadband-cabinet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/11\/briton-ferry-residents-vent-anger-at-new-bt-superfast-broadband-cabinet.html","title":{"rendered":"Briton Ferry Residents Vent Anger at New BT Superfast Broadband Cabinet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two residents of <strong>Shelone Road<\/strong> in the south Wales (UK) town of <strong>Briton Ferry<\/strong> (<em>Llansawel<\/em>) have expressed anger and frustration towards BTOpenreach engineers, whom were allegedly rude to them, after one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s new superfast broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) street cabinets was installed outside their home.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The residents, <strong>Debra Phillips<\/strong> and her partner <strong>David Gray<\/strong>, claim that they &#8220;<em>hadn&#8217;t been given any notice about it<\/em>&#8221; and that the engineers were allegedly rude to them when they queried what was going on and why the 1.6 metre high green box had been placed outside of their home (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> aren&#8217;t required to give locals notice of such developments).<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisissouthwales.co.uk\/Couple-want-BT-cable-cabinet-shuffle\/story-17329077-detail\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">This is South Wales<\/a> (shows a picture of the cabinet in place), the couple were also told by a local <strong>estate agent<\/strong> that the new cabinet &#8220;<em>could devalue the property<\/em>&#8220;, which is despite a growing number of surveys suggesting that it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/cgi-bin\/polls\/_polls.cgi?archive_id=102\" target=\"_blank\">could actually add value<\/a> to have access to the best superfast broadband speeds (currently up to 80Mbps via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Spokeswoman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We are going to investigate the alleged rudeness as this is something of great concern to us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We understand Miss Phillips&#8217;s concerns regarding the location of our cabinet. We will look for the best location to place it to provide as many customers as possible with the option to have our fibre based broadband in their homes and businesses<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Typically such complaints are nothing new, although in this case the high wall in front of the couple\u2019s home is actually almost a foot taller than the cabinet and thus it&#8217;s hard to take this situation as seriously as some of the perhaps more <strong>legitimate complaints<\/strong> of past stories (e.g. cabinets obstructing physical access or almost completely blocking windows etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately we think such boxes are more often than not a small price to pay for the <strong>potentially huge benefits<\/strong> that having access to superfast broadband can bring, although in some cases their placement can indeed be a matter of legitimate concern.<\/p>\n<p>The newly proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/broadband-rollout-boosted-as-new-infrastructure-bill-reaches-uk-parliament.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Growth and Infrastructure Bill<\/strong><\/a> (GIB), which is currently being debated and pledges to soften existing planning restrictions even further, could potentially lead to a rise in related complaints.
