{"id":22336,"date":"2020-06-03T00:01:21","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T23:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=22336"},"modified":"2020-06-03T17:04:59","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T16:04:59","slug":"isp-sky-broadband-uk-start-small-pilot-of-ultrafast-fttp-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/06\/isp-sky-broadband-uk-start-small-pilot-of-ultrafast-fttp-service.html","title":{"rendered":"ISP Sky Broadband UK Start Small Pilot of Ultrafast FTTP Service UPDATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a long wait <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> has finally become the latest UK ISP to introduce an ultrafast and superfast broadband package based off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>&#8217;s Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) network, but sadly this will initially take the form of a small scale pilot and is currently only available to a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> eligible homes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present Sky already sells an &#8220;<em>Ultrafast 1<\/em>&#8221; (145Mbps average speed) package using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>&#8217;s hybrid fibre <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a><\/strong> technology (covers 2.81m premises), but they&#8217;ve also been busy working on a national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> service. In fact it looked as if they were about to launch it earlier this year when <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> (Coronavirus) hit and effectively stalled almost all new FTTP installs, until now (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/03\/covid-19-openreach-stop-uk-broadband-isp-and-phone-work.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> has an ambition to cover 20 million UK premises by the &#8220;<em>mid &#8211; to late-2020s<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/05\/bt-invest-12bn-on-fttp-broadband-for-20-million-uk-premises.html\">here<\/a> (currently at 2.57 million premises passed).<\/div>\n<p>Openreach are now slowly restarting some of their normal engineering operations and, alongside that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> has decided to <del>launch<\/del> pilot their FTTP products. We were expecting something more substantial than this but Sky has instead informed ISPreview.co.uk that they will be rolling out FTTP on a wider scale over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise the pilot currently appears to be largely mirroring Sky&#8217;s existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> (e.g. 80Mbps tier) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> plans (e.g. \u00a339 per month for 145Mbps), although we believe that faster packages will follow in the future (hopefully later this year once they exit the pilot phase). At this time we have not been told precisely which homes are eligible for the pilot and two people who attempted to make an order (over the phone) yesterday were rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise Sky&#8217;s FTTP based packages include the usual array of unlimited usage, service features and new customers will also receive their latest <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> Hub<\/strong> (SR203) router. Just don&#8217;t expect them to be promoting these in public for awhile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> FTTP lines don&#8217;t suffer the same signal (performance) degradation over distance as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a>, so you&#8217;ll get closer to the advertised average speeds.<\/div>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 5pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve spoken to Sky again in the hope of gaining a few extra details. The pilot is available to new customers in existing Openreach FTTP areas, although we&#8217;re still uncertain as to how they&#8217;re judging exact eligibility since some seem able to order it and others don&#8217;t.
