{"id":22983,"date":"2020-07-03T08:26:19","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T07:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=22983"},"modified":"2020-07-03T13:45:51","modified_gmt":"2020-07-03T12:45:51","slug":"vodafone-uk-deploys-improved-standalone-5g-mobile-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/07\/vodafone-uk-deploys-improved-standalone-5g-mobile-tech.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodafone UK Deploys Improved Standalone 5G Mobile Tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> today claims to have become &#8220;<em>the first UK operator<\/em>&#8221; to showcase the next evolution of gigabit-capable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> (mobile broadband) technology &#8211; &#8220;<em>Standalone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a><\/em>&#8221; (SA), which includes support for improvements like ultra-low latency, &#8220;<em>guaranteed speed performance<\/em>&#8221; and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present most of the early commercial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> based network deployments are using <strong>Non-Standalone<\/strong> (NSA) hardware and systems that don&#8217;t yet support all of the features that the new technology was designed to introduce (this is the downside of getting a head-start on most other countries). But it&#8217;s now a year since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> began their roll-outs and inevitably that means they&#8217;ll be starting to field more mature kit.<\/p>\n<p>The first showcase for this has now been deployed at <strong>Coventry University<\/strong>, where the new <strong>Standalone 5G<\/strong> network technology is being used to trial a &#8220;<em>state-of-the-art virtual reality learning technologies<\/em>&#8221; to support training for student nurses and allied health professionals.<\/p>\n<p>In simple terms, NSA 5G was focused on mobile broadband connectivity for faster internet speeds and this was aided by existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> infrastructure. By comparison SA 5G is the next logical step and reflects a completely new end-to-end 5G network (i.e. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> services may still exist but SA is no longer dependent upon the existing network), which gives rise to the aforementioned performance improvements.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Scott Petty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> UK&#8217;s Chief Technology Officer, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a landmark in our 5G journey, just one year on from launch. 5G today is all about capacity and increased speeds. It\u2019s giving people the best mobile experience ever, but it\u2019s only the tip of the iceberg of what 5G can do. With this new live network we\u2019re demonstrating the future potential of 5G and how it will be so valuable to the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p>This new phase of 5G starts to deliver on the incredible capabilities of 5G that have had so much attention, but haven\u2019t yet been brought to life. From here, we will really start to see 5G make a difference to the way organisations think about being connected, and what\u2019s possible with connectivity in the future.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As part of this trial Vodafone has installed <strong>Ericsson&#8217;s 5G Radio Dot System<\/strong> (take note, it&#8217;s not Huawei kit) in the university\u2019s Disruptive Media Learning Lab and National Transport Design Centre. The operator claims that this &#8220;<em>indoor technology will deliver fast, high capacity 5G in key buildings to support its innovative teaching and learning<\/em>.&#8221; MediaTek, OPPO and Qualcomm are also supporting their SA trial.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you the performance of their 5G services will remain limited so long as they can only access a single small slice of the 3.4GHz band. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> are due to auction off more radio spectrum by the end of this year, although legal threats and the COVID-19 crisis haven&#8217;t been kind to their schedule.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Launching The UK\u2019s First 5G Standalone Network | Vodafone Business UK\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TplnkJrLU6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Vodafone&#8217;s SA 5G Summary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This next phase of 5G is totally independent from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>, that\u2019s why it\u2019s called \u2018Standalone\u2019. It opens up far more possibilities to revolutionise how consumers and businesses will connect. Important technology features of the new network include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Network slicing<\/strong> \u2013 enabling mobile operators to offer customers dedicated portions of their network with guaranteed performance.
