Taiwan-based network manufacturer DrayTek<\/a> is a familiar name in the UK broadband ISP world. Since 1997 they’ve been busy building various routers, switches, access points and modems. Suffice to say that we were keen to get their thoughts on the current market for such devices, as well as their plans for the future.<\/p>\n

We often talk about routers on these pages because they’re such a vital part of modern broadband services for both consumers and businesses. At the same time some models can also suffer problems with limited long-term support, performance and not to mention security.<\/p>\n

Mercifully DrayTek, which started out by building ISDN terminal adaptors, are often said to be one of the better manufacturers. The company’s origins started out with ISDN terminal adaptors and routers. “Our first ADSL<\/a> based product was the Vigor 2200USB … from there DSL<\/a> based products became a mainstay of our portfolio, but today we cater for many connection types and speeds<\/em>,” said Richard Sutherland, DrayTek’s Account Director for the UK and Ireland, as part of our interview.<\/p>\n

Richard himself has been involved in the industry from the early days of dialup<\/a> modems and has over 22 years of experience under his belt, which means that he is somebody with a fairly good insight into both the current and future markets for such equipment. We don’t often get a chance to talk with router manufactures and so were grateful to be able to fire a few questions his way.<\/p>\n

The Interview<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Q1. DrayTek has been in the business of building computer network equipment and routers since as far back as 1997 (the early years of consumer internet connectivity). Between 1997 and 2020, what would you say has been your company\u2019s biggest single change?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t put this down to a single change, we have had to adapt to an ever-developing market. Over that last 20-25 years clearly the biggest change has been the blanket adoption of fast, reliable, and robust Internet connectivity. This has, in the main, been driven by savvy business customers who have used the relatively inexpensive connection solutions provided by DrayTek to expand their business in to markets previously they were not able too reach. In turn, DrayTek have delivered reliable, robust and feature rich products to its customers who have made use of technology such as VPNs, VLAN, Wireless, content filtering, and a host of other features and network management tools to enhance and grow their businesses using a range of DrayTek products.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q2. When it comes to broadband routers, one of the hottest debates of recent times has tended to centre on the issue of firmware updates, particularly for security purposes (patching vulnerabilities etc.).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sadly some router manufacturers tend to release a new model, put out one or two firmware releases, and then completely forget about the device. What sort of approach does DrayTek take when it comes to tackling vulnerabilities or adding features via firmware to older routers?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

DrayTek pride themselves in continuing to support a device so long as it has a \u201cheart beat\u201d continuing to provide new firmware way beyond the end of life notification. DrayTek as an organisation have a policy that we will bring in new features, functionality and technology with a firmware upgrade rather than a platform change. Many of the projects we have worked on and won with our ISP customers have been secured due to this, who wants to win a major account with a multi-year contract to be told 6 Months down the line \u201cProduct End Of Life no further support you need to upgrade to the latest version\u201d.<\/p>\n

A typical DrayTek customer will only need to change a device if there is a key broadband technology change required (i.e. ADSL<\/a> to VDSL or ADSL<\/a> to G.Fast<\/a>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q3. Speaking of firmware updates, how long (in years) do you think is right for a router manufacturer in the retail \/ consumer space to continue providing support and updates for their devices before declaring them end-of-life (i.e. no more updates, fixes or support)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

If a product is still using current technologies and is widely deployed it feels right for it to receive support and updates. It\u2019s tricky to set a specific number of years as the usage and availability of the underlying broadband technology is a factor. We are well known for the longevity of our range mainly due to firmware updates, for example we\u2019ve released firmware updates for products that are 10 years old.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q4. The latest multi-Gigabit speed 802.11ax (WiFi<\/a> v6) wireless standard is slowly starting to go mainstream, although we\u2019ve yet to see DrayTek offering a broadband router that supports it. Are you planning an 802.11ax supporting model and, if so, when can we expect to see that? If not, then why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll definitely be adding WiFi<\/a> 6 products to our ranges in the future. We don\u2019t like launching technologies before the standards are ratified as this can impact on the interoperability and future compatibility. We\u2019re planning on launching some WiFi<\/a> 6 products later this year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q5. Speaking of 802.11ax, a number of countries like the UK and USA also appear to be in the process of approving the 6GHz band for use in WiFi networks. What sort of extra challenges and considerations do you have to make when introducing an entirely new band like this to your hardware?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

The biggest challenge with new standards \/ technologies is interoperability and the most challenging variation on this is with client devices. With ISP equipment (eg CO side) there are generally a few specific manufacturers and variants but with client devices as there are a wide variety of manufacturers and model. Things settle down reasonable quickly but it requires specific consideration.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q6. No doubt you\u2019ve probably heard about moves across various countries to restrict some of your rivals, such as Huawei (as well as ZTE) and other vendors deemed \u201chigh risk<\/em>\u201d, from being able to supply kit for new networks (sometimes limited to core kit, but other times covering all types of enterprise kit and even consumer routers). Where does DrayTek stand on the issue?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

Our policy is not to make specific comments on our competitors, we endeavour to supply highly reliable products to our customers with comprehensive support and we leave our customers to decide which organisations they wish to partner with.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q7. Many broadband routers tend to ship with 1Gps Ethernet (LAN \/ WAN) ports as standard, which has been the norm for quite a few years now. <\/strong><\/p>\n

However, some ISPs are already offering 2Gbps and 10Gbps broadband connections via FTTH<\/a> (more common in other countries than the UK), while home wireless networks can also benefit from multi-Gigabit local connectivity under 802.11ax (including some 802.11ac Wave 2 implementations).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite these changes we’ve yet to see many consumer routers being released with support for the 2.5G<\/a>+ speed (or faster Ethernet standards) for wired LAN connections. Why is this and when can we expect that to start changing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

The headline speeds for wireless often appear to be above 1Gbps Ethernet but in reality, for consumer products they\u2019ve always been lower in terms of real-world throughput. WiFi 6 makes it feasible for 1Gbps + throughput to be seen, so the question of the LAN being a bottleneck become more relevant.<\/p>\n

For the average home user, it\u2019s less likely they\u2019ll have a LAN side device which is capable of speeds above 1G although there are clearly examples in the area of network attached storage. I think developments on this will keep pace with the LAN demands.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q8. DrayTek\u2019s routers have tended to follow the same broad strokes of physical design style for as long as we can remember. Is this a case of \u201cif it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it<\/em>\u201d (i.e. functionality over form) or do you plan any more radical looking visual router designs in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

You have to admit there have been some strange looking devices released over the years, described as anything from a dead spider to a space ship.<\/p>\n

Business class routers often need to be rack or wall mounted with the majority of our portfolio fitting into this category there has been no reason to justify a change, our customers like the look and the design shows quality, the port and LED layout means you don\u2019t need to move the product to check cables, the power switch cant accidentally be hit.<\/p>\n

So as you say \u201cif it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q9. Over the next few years it seems likely, as many operators retire copper lines and go full fibre, that demand will rise for broadband routers that can support VoIP phones (via FXO \/ FXS ports). At present only the top models in each of DrayTek\u2019s ranges tend to include this sort of support but as demand rises then do you expect this to become a common requirement?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

Yes and a larger selection of VoIP products are on our roadmap, we will look to bring these out as demand increases.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q10. At present 2020 is shaping up to be a very different year from previous ones, not least due to the impact of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) on complex supply chains and network deployments. Can you tell us a bit about what sort of impact the pandemic has had on your company, if any, and how you\u2019ve had to adapt?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

Obviously working from home for many of our colleagues has been a new experience, some have taken to it well others prefer the distinct break between the work environment and the home environment. Customer meetings have all been on line via different media channels and we fully expect this to be a large part of the \u201cnew normal\u201d.<\/p>\n

A large proportion of our customer base is the ISP industry, we have noticed a significant increase for information and requirements for VPN and LTE specifically where people working from home had capped data limits. On lockdown day we had a massive spike in sales for LTE and VPN products, with the exception of working from home the only key impact was having to fly stock in and the associated additional expense.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q11. Finally, what, in your view, are the top five new features that you expect router manufactures to be adding over the next few years and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n

Really good question. The first is clearly Fibre. VDSL is an excellent technology for speed and reliability, but there will be a migration to fibre to the home, which has the potential to deliver greater speeds and reliability.<\/p>\n

Secondly, businesses management of their wider area network is going to be critical. The technology that will deliver this is called Software Defined WAN (SDWAN), and DrayTek will soon launch a platform for SDWAN.<\/p>\n

Thirdly, recently events have highlighted strengths or perhaps weaknesses for employee\u2019s ability to work from home. So, in the coming months there is likely be a focus of deploying technology to enable a greater home working capability in businesses.<\/p>\n

Companies will look at deploying more technology within their businesses, either remote working capability, faster availability of data etc. They will look at technology companies like DrayTek who not only have the technology itself, but the means of supporting their hardware to get complicated features working to customer requirements. One of the greatest strengths of DrayTek is our ability to offer an excellent support service that enables customers to tap into support channels to help unlock the complex technology in our routers, firewalls, switches, and wireless products.<\/p>\n

Fifth the obvious ones and some already exist – 802.11ax, Ethernet ports will be dual function and able to work with POT\u2019s and also provide PoE, Bluetooth connectivity, built in LTE, touch screen control panel, SD-WAN.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
