{"id":2327,"date":"2012-12-18T08:09:45","date_gmt":"2012-12-18T08:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2327"},"modified":"2012-12-18T08:09:45","modified_gmt":"2012-12-18T08:09:45","slug":"superfast-broadband-reaches-the-most-southerly-point-of-the-british-mainland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/12\/superfast-broadband-reaches-the-most-southerly-point-of-the-british-mainland.html","title":{"rendered":"Superfast Broadband Reaches Most Southerly Point of the British Mainland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The \u00a3132m &#8220;<em>Big Build<\/em>&#8221; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.superfastcornwall.org\" target=\"_new\">Superfast Cornwall<\/a><\/strong> project, which aims to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s superfast broadband ISP services available to &#8220;<em>at least<\/em>&#8221; 80% of premises in <strong>Cornwall<\/strong> and the <strong>Isles of Scilly<\/strong> by the end of 2014, has <strong>connected 17,000 customers<\/strong> in the region and reached Britain&#8217;s most southerly community (<strong>Lizard Point<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Lizard Peninsula<\/strong> is officially the most southerly point of the British mainland and until recently had not been able to receive a reliable broadband service. Now around<strong> 700 homes and businesses<\/strong> in the area, including in the neighbouring villages of <strong>Cadgwith<\/strong> and <strong>Ruan Minor<\/strong>, have access to the new service.<\/p>\n<p>In addition the Big Build project has so far extended the reach of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) services to over 45% of premises in Cornwall, with some <strong>17,000 subscribers<\/strong> having adopted the new service (significantly up from the 6,000+ recorded in April 2012 and 15,000+ last month).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Ranulf Scarbrough, BTs Superfast Cornwall Director, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The arrival of superfast broadband opens another exciting chapter in the story of an iconic location already famous for its links with Marconi and Telstar. Some of the most exciting experiments of modern times have taken place on The Lizard, such as Marconi&#8217;s first live transatlantic radio message and the first live transatlantic television pictures via the Goonhilly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">Satellite<\/a> Earth Station. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Now we are seeing a new communications technology introduced, which also has the ability to transform the lives of people and businesses. Take-up of fibre optic broadband at The Lizard is very encouraging with 15 happy customers already connected and a further 46 orders to be completed<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>James and Donna Glosby, landlord of the local <strong>Top House Inn<\/strong>, which is also Britain&#8217;s most southerly inn, added: &#8220;<em>Being located in the most southerly village, we are exposed to the elements and at times we have struggled to get any connection at all.
