As usual we’re ending 2020 by taking a quick look back over the year to see how average download and upload speeds have changed across the top national fixed line home broadband ISPs and mobile network operators. Predictably, the rising take-up of faster connections has resulted in a general improvement.<\/p>\n

The service speeds measured in this article tend to be impacted by two primary factors, such as the rising levels of network coverage by faster broadband technologies and their associated take-up by consumers. In that sense Ofcom<\/a>’s latest coverage data should help to put the current market into some context.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> The coverage data below is measured at the same time in September each year. The old “superfast<\/em>” figure for 24Mbps+ coverage is over 96%.<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

During 2020 there have been several big developments. Firstly, the new generation of 1000Mbps+ (Gigabit) capable “full fibre<\/em>” (FTTP<\/a>) networks have continued their rapid roll-out across the United Kingdom, rising from 10% of premises last year to 18% now. Secondly, Virgin Media<\/a>’s upgrade to their similarly fast DOCSIS<\/a> 3.1 technology (downstream), which is expected to reach c.16 million premises by the end of 2021, continues to spread (this is also helping to fuel the gigabit coverage figure).<\/p>\n

Finally, all four of the primary Mobile Network Operators (MNO) have now begun to roll-out faster 5G<\/a> (mobile broadband) technology, but at present most of these can only access a modest slice of the 3.4GHz<\/strong> band (plus some dynamic use of existing 4G<\/a> bands) and coverage remains limited. On top of that the UK Government’s decision to ban Huawei is also expected to significantly delay this roll-out (here<\/a>), particularly for EE<\/a> and Vodafone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile 4G<\/a> geographic coverage is as follows: EE<\/a> 85%, Vodafone<\/a> 82%, O2<\/a> 80% and Three UK<\/a> 79%, although this is expected to receive a gradual boost from the \u00a31bn Shared Rural Network<\/strong><\/a> (SRN) project that aims to hit 95% coverage by the end of 2025 from at least one operator (i.e. each operator must hit at least 90% by then).<\/p>\n

Despite all this progress it’s worth remembering that most consumers will still be using slower packages and technologies, which tends to result in a more gradual performance improvement through natural upgrading.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Speedtests can easily be affected by all sorts of issues within the home, such as slow WiFi<\/a>, limitations of the tester itself, local network congestion and package choice (a lot of people will pick a slower and cheaper plan, even with 1Gbps available). The following results are thus only good for observing general market change over time and MUST NOT be taken as a reflection of ISP capability.<\/div>\n

Fastest Fixed Line Broadband ISPs (H2 2020)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The following results stem from Thinkbroadband<\/a>‘s independent speedtest database (including ISPreview’s Broadband Speedtest<\/a><\/strong>) and we’ve only included independent ISPs with strong national availability. We would have liked to cover smaller alternative network (altnet) ISPs too but they aren’t yet available to the majority of premises and don’t produce enough data, although we have still added a few examples of those later on.<\/p>\n

As usual there are some common caveats to consider with speedtest based results, not least that such scores tend to be more reflective of take-up than network availability. For example, some ISPs may have a much larger proportion of customers on slower copper ADSL<\/a> lines and that can weigh against anybody on faster fibre services with the same provider (i.e. pushing average speeds down).<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> The top 10% is the speed experienced by the fastest 10% of users on each ISP (below in brackets) . The results are averages (mean) in Megabits per second (Mbps). Data was processed at the start of December 2020.<\/div>\n

Overall, the average download speed<\/strong> of the top national providers was 45.77Mbps (up from 38.66Mbps at the end of 2019) and the average upload speed<\/strong> hit 10.53Mbps (up from 9.01Mbps).<\/p>\n

Naturally, Virgin Media<\/a>’s new 1Gbps package and general speed boosts in other areas have continued to help them retain their top position among the national providers. But the biggest mover has to be BT<\/a>, which saw that download ranking move from 5th to 3rd and we suspect that’s partly down to the launch of their first FTTP<\/a> plans earlier in 2020.<\/p>\n

On the flip side Zen Internet<\/a> appears to have suffered a fall in performance and we’ll be watching to see if they bounce back in time for our next biannual update in 2021.<\/p>\n

Now flick over to page 2 to see how the fastest alternative network ISPs and mobile operators performed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On this page we take a quick look at how some of the more established altnet Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (FTTP) providers – those that have built their own physically separate networks – perform when compared with the mainstream national ISPs. Sadly, most altnets only have comparatively niche coverage and limited speedtest data, which means that we’re only able to summarise a few of them.<\/p>\n

Since these “full fibre<\/em>” ISPs don’t suffer from the same performance pitfalls as copper or hybrid fibre networks then we tend to only focus our results on the top 10% of fastest connections, which in most cases will reflect those consumers who take the fastest package tiers available from each provider.<\/p>\n

The caveat is that these scores will still be heavily affected by the same issues as mentioned earlier (e.g. slow Wi-Fi, local network congestion etc.). Some FTTP ISPs have also requested that we display the average speeds for only their fastest available package, but often there simply isn’t enough data for that to be viable and our purpose here is to examine general market change.<\/p>\n

In an ideal world all providers would also publish their own internal speedtest data (i.e. to the customer’s router) for each of their packages, but they probably won\u2019t do that unless forced by Ofcom<\/a> (this would enable us to see how such connections perform when WiFi<\/a> is taken out of the equation).<\/p>\n

Obviously, such providers are anything but slow and it’s probably not worth reading too much into speed fluctuations here as the faster you go, the more obvious the caveats of web-based speed testing and other factors (slow WiFi<\/a> etc.) tend to become. Hopefully as more altnets surface and grow then we’ll be able to expand this table, but generally speaking most FTTP providers deliver excellent performance.<\/p>\n

The Fastest Mobile Operators<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Mobile speeds remain incredibly difficult to pin down due to the highly variable nature of the technology. Users of such services are always moving through different areas (indoor, outdoor, underground etc.), using different devices with different capabilities and the environment around them (weather, trees, buildings etc.) is ever changeable. All of this impacts your signal and that’s before we even consider network (backhaul) capacity or spectrum ownership.<\/p>\n

Suffice to say that studies of mobile broadband performance should always be considered open to variation, yet the top networks often tend to be those with a combination of the best 4G or 5G<\/a> coverage, a good amount of radio spectrum and the most advanced technology.<\/p>\n

Over the past 12 months we’ve also see the coverage of ultrafast 5G<\/a> technology increase, albeit not as fast as hoped due to COVID-19, the Huawei ban and adoption among consumers being low. Nevertheless, 5G’s influence will continue to grow, particularly once Ofcom<\/a> auctions off more radio bands (this process has also suffered significant delays).<\/p>\n

Overall, the average download speed<\/strong> of the four primary mobile operators was 27.75Mbps (up from 23.62Mbps at the end of 2019) and the average upload speed<\/strong> hit 6.27Mbps (up from 6Mbps).<\/p>\n

The main change this time around is that Three UK<\/a> has pulled ahead of Vodafone<\/a> for download performance with a significant speed increase of 47.85% over the past year, which may be partly due to all the 5G spectrum they have available and recent capacity upgrades. But we’ll have to see if they can maintain this position with our next biannual update in 2021.<\/p>\n

Ofcom are also due to auction off additional 5G friendly spectrum in early 2021, which may yet change the above order. Otherwise, it’s a little disappointing to see that O2<\/a> and Vodafone have struggled to improve, although other surveys tend to be more favourable to Vodafone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
