BT<\/a> and the Suffolk County Council<\/a> (SCC) have today signed a new \u00a340 million contract<\/strong> that will use government state aid from the Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) office to help make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services available to 85-90% of local homes and businesses by\u00a0the end of\u00a02015 (but it use to be June 2015).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The roll-out will be dominated by BT<\/a>’s up to 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet<\/strong> (FTTC<\/a>) and 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (FTTP<\/a>) based technologies and only 2% of the \u201chardest to reach premises<\/em>\u201d are expected to be left with sub-5Mbps speeds (note: from spring 2013 anybody with an FTTC<\/a> line will also be able to get FTTP<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Back in September 2012 the SCC anticipated that the first premises to be connected through its Better Broadband For Suffolk<\/strong><\/a> programme would do so by the end of 2012, although there’s no mention of this in today’s press release (i.e. it won’t happen until 2013). We also noticed that the predicted\u00a0overall end date has shifted from June 2015 to the “end of 2015<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

Bill Murphy, Managing Director of BT<\/a>’s NGA Divison, said: <\/strong><\/p>\n

“This is great news for Suffolk. The county is ambitious for economic growth and higher-speed broadband services are crucial for delivering that by helping to retain and grow small businesses, providing access to a global online market for entertainment and business opportunities and creating jobs.<\/em><\/p>\n

Fibre broadband will bring Suffolk\u2019s predominantly rural economy into the digital fast lane \u2013 revitalising small towns, villages and hamlets by making it possible to start and run a connected business from these locations and in the long-term, ensuring local people don\u2019t suffer from a digital divide<\/em>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mark Bee, Suffolk County Council\u2019s Leader, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“When we launched the Better Broadband for Suffolk campaign, we wanted to ensure that everyone who lives and works in our county benefits. Today I\u2019m proud to say that, with BT, we aim to deliver exactly that.<\/em><\/p>\n

Improving access to broadband is going to help Suffolk\u2019s economy grow by as much as 20% and create up to 5000 new jobs. There\u2019s a digital divide between Suffolk and the rest of the country but an even more acute disparity between urban and rural Suffolk. The Better Broadband programme is going to close those gaps, boost school attainment and help the public sector to deliver services more efficiently and cheaply<\/em>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Better Broadband for Suffolk \u2018intervention area\u2019 (i.e. where public money can be used to improve the service) is\u00a0roughly 39% of Suffolk (134,500 properties).By March 2014, the entire Waveney Local Enterprise Zone area is also expected to have access to superfast speeds.<\/p>\n

BT informed ISPreview.co.uk that a firm start date for the roll-out has yet to be set.<\/p>\n
