{"id":2375,"date":"2012-12-28T08:16:17","date_gmt":"2012-12-28T08:16:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2375"},"modified":"2012-12-28T08:17:03","modified_gmt":"2012-12-28T08:17:03","slug":"hull-isp-kc-moves-to-fix-broadband-faults-caused-by-water-ingress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/12\/hull-isp-kc-moves-to-fix-broadband-faults-caused-by-water-ingress.html","title":{"rendered":"Hull ISP KC Moves to Fix Copper Broadband Faults Caused by Water Ingress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of KC&#8217;s engineers in <strong>Hull<\/strong> (Yorkshire, England) has developed a &#8220;<em>simple and innovative<\/em>&#8221; way to fix broadband problems that are caused when water (damp) seeps into the plastic coating of <strong>copper cables<\/strong>, which can disrupt traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a> (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a>) services by causing <strong>corrosion of the phone line<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The ISP claims that over <strong>80 telephone faults each month<\/strong> are caused by such problems, which can also impact customers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s network and at an extreme can trigger the total failure of both phone and broadband connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Now one of the ISPs engineers, <strong>Ian Shepherdson<\/strong>, claims to have come up with a way to &#8220;<em>fix the problem<\/em>&#8221; and save KC &#8220;<em>thousands of pounds each month<\/em>&#8220;. The solution involves a <strong>simple plastic plate<\/strong> that &#8220;<em>fits behind the existing capping covering a connection point, forming a protective barrier between the brickwork on a property and the copper cable<\/em>&#8220;. Best of all it only <strong>costs 30p to make<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Andy Whale, KCs Director of Engineering, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The simplest ideas are often the best, and this is a great example of someone identifying a problem then coming up with a simple and effective way to solve it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Customers rely on their phone and broadband services, and we\u2019re continually looking for ways to reduce faults and increase reliability on our network.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m particularly pleased that this is a totally home-grown solution, developed by one of our employees and produced by another local company<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far KC claims to have <strong>installed 1,500 of the\u00a0plates<\/strong> and thousands more will be targeted towards &#8220;<em>the worst-affected locations over the next year<\/em>&#8220;. It should also be said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s network is not necessarily strictly comparable with KC&#8217;s and thus the same solution may not apply.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that there can be other potential points where water could damage copper cables and thus we&#8217;d be surprised if this was a total solution to the overall problem.
