{"id":23961,"date":"2020-09-13T00:01:52","date_gmt":"2020-09-12T23:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=23961"},"modified":"2020-09-11T17:06:46","modified_gmt":"2020-09-11T16:06:46","slug":"isp-bt-trials-new-kit-to-make-home-broadband-more-reliable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/09\/isp-bt-trials-new-kit-to-make-home-broadband-more-reliable.html","title":{"rendered":"ISP BT Trials New Kit to Make Home Broadband More Reliable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> has begun inviting customers to a new &#8220;<em>Hub Equipment<\/em>&#8221; trial, which is due to start at the end of September 2020 and proposes to test a &#8220;<em>a new piece of kit that works with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> Home Hub<\/em>&#8221; (or Smart Hub router) and &#8220;<em>makes your broadband even more reliable<\/em>.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The description is admittedly pretty vague, although after a little digging we now think we know what this might be. We know that, internally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> have been working on trying to change the customer focus from speed and price to reliability and one way to do that is by updating their current <strong>HALO<\/strong> add-on.<\/p>\n<p>One feature of the premium HALO service is BT&#8217;s <strong>Keep Connected Promise<\/strong>, which among other things pledges to &#8220;<em>get you back online quickly<\/em>&#8221; if your fixed broadband line stops working. The main way in which they do that is by sending out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> based <strong>Mini Hub<\/strong> (Mobile Broadband based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> Router) at no extra cost.<\/p>\n<p>The trial is thus expected to test a newer version of the Mini Hub, which will deliver better performance and support more devices (we don&#8217;t yet know if they intend to add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a>). The device may thus also help to support BT&#8217;s evolving move toward a &#8220;<em>hybrid<\/em>&#8221; all-IP network, where internet connectivity between mobile and fixed line broadband services will become almost seamless.<\/p>\n<p>At present if you want the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> Mini Hub then you generally have to wait for an outage before you can request it, but BT&#8217;s future approach may change this so that the Mini Hub, Smart Hub router and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> Mesh kit (repeaters) are all shipped out at the same time, ready for use.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>As part of the trial, we may provide you with a new Hub and\/or an additional piece of equipment to use with the Hub. As well as the extra equipment, we\u2019ll also cover the cost of your entire bill for the duration of the trial, subject to you filling in a few surveys when asked<\/em>,&#8221; said BT&#8217;s trial invite to customers.
