{"id":2434,"date":"2013-01-10T08:28:18","date_gmt":"2013-01-10T08:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2434"},"modified":"2013-01-10T08:29:19","modified_gmt":"2013-01-10T08:29:19","slug":"broadband-delivery-uk-stretches-admin-budget-away-from-rural-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/01\/broadband-delivery-uk-stretches-admin-budget-away-from-rural-projects.html","title":{"rendered":"Broadband Delivery UK Stretches Admin Budget Away from Rural Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The governments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) office, which is responsible for managing the \u00a3830m publicly funded roll-out of superfast broadband ISP services to reach 90% of people by spring 2015, will see just 63% of its <strong>\u00a33.8m administration budget<\/strong> spent on rural projects in 2012-13 (down from 100% in 2010-11 and 94% in 2011-12).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworlduk.com\/news\/public-sector\/3419636\/bduk-expects-63-of-2012-13-budget-will-be-spent-on-rural-broadband\/\" target=\"_blank\">Computerworld UK<\/a>, the change is because BDUK has taken on additional admin responsibilities, such as the \u00a3164m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/12\/government-names-10-smaller-uk-cities-for-ultrafast-broadband-funding.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Urban Broadband Fund<\/strong><\/a> (UBF) for expanding the coverage of &#8220;<em>ultra-fast<\/em>&#8221; broadband (80-100Mbps+) and &#8220;<em>high speed<\/em>&#8221; public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a> services into neglected areas of 22 large and smaller cities.<\/p>\n<p>BDUK is also now responsible for the \u00a3150m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/12\/fresh-funding-doubts-hit-plan-to-extend-uk-mobile-broadband-coverage.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mobile Infrastructure Project<\/strong><\/a> (MIP), which aims to help &#8220;<em>at least<\/em>&#8221; 98% of UK people gain access to a Mobile Broadband service by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>History &#8211; BDUK Administration Budgets<\/strong><br \/>\n2010-11 &#8211; \u00a31 million (100% for rural projects)<br \/>\n2011-12 &#8211; \u00a35.85 million (94% for rural projects)<br \/>\n2012-13 &#8211; \u00a33.8 million (63% for rural projects)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year it was revealed that a whopping <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/11\/uk-government-has-spent-gbp9-8m-on-70-external-broadband-consultants.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>\u00a39.8m of the office\u2019s budget<\/strong><\/a> had already been spent on <strong>70 external consultants<\/strong> (between May 2010 and September 2012) and the department suffered a <strong>staff turnover rate of 110%<\/strong> for three quarters (the rate at which an employer gains and loses employees).
