{"id":24509,"date":"2020-10-22T10:24:12","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T09:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=24509"},"modified":"2020-10-22T12:24:54","modified_gmt":"2020-10-22T11:24:54","slug":"three-uk-completes-voice-over-lte-volte-rollout-on-4g","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/10\/three-uk-completes-voice-over-lte-volte-rollout-on-4g.html","title":{"rendered":"Three UK Completes Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) Rollout on 4G"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After five long years mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> has today announced that they&#8217;ve finally completed the rollout of their Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service (aka &#8211; &#8220;<em>Super Voice<\/em>&#8220;), which is now available across their entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> network (equating to around 11,000 sites). Next stop.. EVS.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>VoLTE<\/strong> service on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>&#8217;s network harnesses the <strong>1800MHz<\/strong> and <strong>2100MHz<\/strong> radio spectrum bands in order to deliver higher quality voice calling and text messages, which are then sent over the normally more data centric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/longtermevolution\">Long Term Evolution<\/a>) network. The operator was the first to begin deploying this in 2015 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/09\/three-uk-becomes-first-to-launch-commercial-4g-super-voice-volte.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Three states that 7.5 million customers on their network already own a VoLTE enabled device (i.e. 80% of their customer base should see some improvement). Additionally, VoLTE&#8217;s call speech quality is more reliable than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> and it can be further enhanced with the use of <strong>Enhanced Voice Speech<\/strong> (EVS), which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> is &#8220;<em>planning to introduce later this year<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Three UK said: &#8220;<em>We now have over 11,000 sites enabling VoLTE on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> 1800\/2100 MHz spectrum which will help improve customer experience. In the past, customers could find themselves dropping back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a>, but with VoLTE now enabled, this will not happen<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the future EVS standard has been around for a few years now and offers up to 20kHz of audio bandwidth, alongside better tolerance for delay jitter and packet loss etc. We should point out that some other UK operators, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>), began launching EVS (marketed as &#8220;<em>Enhanced HD Voice<\/em>&#8220;) all the way back in 2017 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/09\/ee-uk-launch-enhanced-hd-voice-calling-4g-network-wifi.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One interesting thing to note about this announcement is that, back in 2015\/16, Three UK said they intended to use Band 20 (<strong>800MHz<\/strong>) for VoLTE, although it gets no mention in today&#8217;s update despite being used for the service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After five long years mobile operator Three UK has today announced that they&#8217;ve finally completed the rollout of their Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service (aka &#8211; &#8220;Super Voice&#8220;), which is now available across their entire 4G network (equating to around 11,000 sites).
