{"id":24534,"date":"2020-10-26T08:58:22","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T08:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=24534"},"modified":"2020-10-29T06:54:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T06:54:02","slug":"end-of-daylight-saving-time-corrects-sky-uk-voip-timing-bug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/10\/end-of-daylight-saving-time-corrects-sky-uk-voip-timing-bug.html","title":{"rendered":"End of Daylight Saving Time Negates Sky UK VoIP Timing Bug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The change to Daylight Saving Time (DST) on Sunday, which saw clocks go back by 1 hour, has given some customers of UK ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> &#8211; specifically a few of those with a VoIP based Sky Talk service and the SR203\/204 (Sky Hub) router, a reprieve from an otherwise on-going timing bug.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As we reported in August (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/08\/isp-sky-broadband-uk-preps-firmware-to-fix-voip-timing-bug.html\">here<\/a>), newer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> customers are now often being provided with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/03\/openreach-formally-launch-naked-broadband-via-sogea.html\"><strong>SOGEA<\/strong><\/a> (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a>) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> based broadband connection. In this setup the phone service is handled via VoIP and thus your handset must be plugged directly into the router.<\/p>\n<p>However, one of Sky&#8217;s past firmware updates to their <strong>Sky Hub<\/strong> introduced a new bug that can result in the customer&#8217;s handset reporting <strong>Greenwich Mean Time<\/strong> (GMT) rather than <strong>British Summer Time<\/strong> (BST). In other words, this created a 1-hour time difference between the network and handset, which among other things can occasionally result in some calls failing to connect.<\/p>\n<p>A firmware fix for this bug was originally expected to be rolled out by the end of September, but that never happened and it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/helpforum.sky.com\/t5\/Broadband\/Sky-Hub-4-2-with-firmware-5-11-1993-R-hows-your-phones-clock-time-and-are-all-callers-getting-thru\/td-p\/3406113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">currently listed<\/a> as &#8220;<em>TBC<\/em>&#8221; (To Be Confirmed). However, Sunday&#8217;s change back to GMT means that Sky&#8217;s customers should be finding that they can move their phone handsets back to pulling the time and date via <strong>Caller ID<\/strong>, thus the correct time will now be registered (two people have so far reported that this works).<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly this is not a permanent solution, but it does give Sky a little longer to resolve the underlying issue, at least until <strong>28th March 2021<\/strong> when the clocks will once again jump forward by 1 hour. Lest we forget that the ISP also has some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> and DHCP bugs to fix with their router(s) too (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/10\/sky-uk-trying-to-fix-access-point-temporarily-full-router-bug.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We should point out that annoying router bugs can happen on any ISP from time to time, much as we&#8217;ve seen from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> in the recent past.
