{"id":24577,"date":"2020-10-29T00:01:38","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T00:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=24577"},"modified":"2020-10-28T10:47:38","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T10:47:38","slug":"o2-uk-to-donate-10000-mobiles-and-free-service-to-digitally-excluded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/10\/o2-uk-to-donate-10000-mobiles-and-free-service-to-digitally-excluded.html","title":{"rendered":"O2 UK to Donate 10,000 Mobiles and Free Service to Digitally Excluded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (Telefonica) will today extend their existing partnership with Hubbub (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/05\/o2-uk-trial-gives-away-old-smartphones-to-vulnerable-people.html\">here<\/a>), with the aim being to donate 10,000 devices and 12 months of free calling and internet connectivity to &#8220;<em>digitally excluded people<\/em>&#8221; in UK cities that are either facing, or at risk of, new Tier 3 lockdown restrictions (COVID-19).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The related <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hubbub.org.uk\/communitycalling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Community Calling<\/strong><\/a> project works by inviting people to donate their old phones so that they can then be refurbished and redistributed to people who might otherwise go without. As part of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> has agreed to supply 12 months of free connectivity to the beneficiaries, which will include unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 6GB of data (mobile broadband) per month.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme is now being extended nationwide, with Smartphones first donated in the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark &#8211; locations with high levels of inequality, poverty, exclusion and employment challenges. After that it will reach Manchester, Bristol, Leeds, Swansea and Glasgow. The full rollout is then expected to be completed by <strong>Spring 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Mark Evans, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Connectivity has been vital to keeping the country running during the pandemic, but if you\u2019re unable to get online you\u2019re likely to miss out on a lot of support. We\u2019ve already seen the positive impact Community Calling has had on vulnerable people in Southwark, so we\u2019re pleased to announce this expansion and tackle digital exclusion elsewhere across the country. We\u2019re determined to support the people who need it most.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>O2 and Hubbub said they&#8217;re working closely with local community groups in each city to identify those &#8220;<em>most in need of a smartphone<\/em>&#8220;, such as people who desperately need access to essential services, support with education and employment, or to keep connected with loved ones.
