{"id":2493,"date":"2013-01-21T08:02:36","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T08:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2493"},"modified":"2013-01-21T09:30:55","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T09:30:55","slug":"controversial-uk-hs2-train-project-set-to-boost-fibre-optic-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/01\/controversial-uk-hs2-train-project-set-to-boost-fibre-optic-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"Controversial UK HS2 Train Project Set to Boost Fibre Optic Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK governments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-transport\" target=\"_blank\">Department for Transport<\/a> (DfT) has confirmed that its costly <strong>\u00a333bn<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">High Speed Two<\/a> (<em>HS2<\/em>) project, which aims to build a new <strong>high speed rail link<\/strong> between the midlands and northern England, will also deliver broadband benefits into more areas by laying <strong>fibre optic cables<\/strong> alongside its tracks.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The controversial scheme, which has <a href=\"http:\/\/stophs2.org\/facts\" target=\"_blank\">faced heavy criticism<\/a> due to its <strong>exceptionally high cost<\/strong> and allegedly limited potential for creating new jobs and boosting the economy, is keen to show that it&#8217;s about more than just transport and could also improve broadband, water and electricity supplies to areas along its route.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Simon Burns MP, Minister of State for Transport, said (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uk\/2013\/jan\/20\/hs2-to-spread-high-speed-broadband\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>HS2 is far more than a new railway line \u2013 it is a national infrastructure project that will bring places and people closer together while creating jobs and driving growth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Construction of HS2 gives us the perfect opportunity to explore how we can make it easier for even more people to benefit from ultra-fast broadband and potentially deliver improvements to the provision of other utility services<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But data from the telecoms regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, allegedly shows that between 70% and 90% of homes along HS2&#8217;s planned development can already access some form of superfast broadband connection. On the other hand a further improvement to network capacity couldn&#8217;t hurt and might even help to support coverage beyond the immediate areas.<\/p>\n<p>Talk of a new &#8220;<em>broadband superhighway<\/em>&#8221; along the HS2 route from <strong>London to Birmingham<\/strong> is all very well but many may wonder why so much money is being spent on such a development when it could potentially be used elsewhere, such as\u00a0to bring a true fibre optic link to every home and business across the entire United Kingdom.
