{"id":24990,"date":"2020-11-27T14:53:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T14:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=24990"},"modified":"2020-11-27T16:43:46","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T16:43:46","slug":"study-of-5g-network-congestion-finds-three-uk-suffers-most","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/11\/study-of-5g-network-congestion-finds-three-uk-suffers-most.html","title":{"rendered":"Study of 5G and 4G Congestion Finds Three UK Suffers Most"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crowdsourced benchmarking firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tutela.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tutela<\/a> has just published the results of a new study, which examined the effect of network congestion on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> and the latest ultrafast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> based mobile broadband networks from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>. Sadly Three suffered the most and slowed by over 36% during peak hours, on average.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Tutela acknowledges that <span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">there is &#8220;<em>no strict threshold of congestion used by network engineers<\/em>&#8221; and indeed you can use different metrics to study it, although they don&#8217;t appear to fully explain what methodology they themselves have chosen. But from what we can gather, they seem to be generally looking at the difference between peak (busy) vs off-peak (not busy) periods.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">The above issue is important because mobile speeds can vary due to multiple different factors (e.g. distance, location, bands being used, cell site capacity, buildings etc.) and so being able to establish a baseline is important, albeit also inherently difficult on such variable platforms.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">In this case Tutela seem to be relying on a general analysis of the crowdsourced performance data from their previous report (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/09\/tutelas-august-data-ranks-uk-mobile-operators-by-performance.html\">here<\/a>), which collected over 180 million speed and latency tests via mobile apps. Overall, the new study noted that, during peak hours, 10% of all tests were below 1.5Mbps. Hull, Bedford, Slough and Southampton were also among the worst impacted cities, experiencing nearly a 50% drop in speed during peak hours.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2020-uk-internet-statistics\/tutela_5g_congestion_uk_cities_nov_2020.png\" alt=\"Tutela 5g congestion uk cities november 2020\"><\/p>\n<p>The fact that Hull tops this list is quite interesting, not least since it&#8217;s a city with practically universal coverage of full fibre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband infrastructure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/kcom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">KCOM<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">Cityfibre<\/a> also do a lot of <strong>Dark Fibre<\/strong> to mobile sites. However, as stated earlier, mobile performance is a complicated area to benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>The firm then noted that <span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>&#8217;s network &#8220;<em>suffers the highest level of congestion<\/em>&#8221; among the major UK MNOs, slowing by over 36% during peak hours, on average. By comparison, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> suffered the least congestion on 22.44%.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 29px;\"><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>% Slowdown in Average Download Throughput<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> 36.49%<br \/>\n2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> 31.16%<br \/>\n3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> 25.41%<br \/>\n4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> 22.44%<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study also looked at the difference between download and upload throughput. &#8220;<em>Download throughput is typically faster than upload throughput, so looking at the percentage of tests where the inverse is true can help identify congestion<\/em>,&#8221; said Tutela.<\/p>\n<p>Across the country, Vodafone has the highest proportion of tests where upload is faster than download. However, Three UK is on par with it, or worse, during peak hours between 4-9pm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2020-uk-internet-statistics\/tutela_5g_congestion_uk_download_vs_upload_speed_nov_2020.png\" alt=\"tutela_5g_congestion_uk_download_vs_upload_speed_nov_2020\"><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">The fact that customers on some networks, like Three UK, might be more data hungry than those on others, is another factor to consider.<\/span> However, part of this is because Three UK were one of the first operators to offer &#8220;<em>all you can eat<\/em>&#8221; (now &#8220;<em>unlimited<\/em>&#8220;) data plans on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> network, which is something that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and Vodafone have only recently adopted with the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As ever we&#8217;re still in the early phase of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> rollouts and some operators have also been dealt a heavy blow by the Government&#8217;s decision to ban<strong> Huawei<\/strong>, which has impacted the rollout plans for Three UK, EE and Vodafone. However, we note that most operators are continuing to upgrade the fibre optic backhaul capacity of their mobile sites and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> will soon be releasing more radio spectrum for 5G, which bodes well for the future.<\/p>\n<p>As usual we must also stress that any testing conducting via non-dedicated apps could be less accurate than dedicated ones (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/opensignal\" target=\"_blank\">opensignal<\/a>). Crowdsourced data can also be affected by the user\u2019s location, as well as any limitations of the device being used and it similarly lacks a common type of hardware (useful when trying to form a solid scientific baseline). Take with a pinch of salt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 4:42pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just a quick correction.
