{"id":26222,"date":"2021-03-08T17:13:58","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T17:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=26222"},"modified":"2021-03-08T17:16:23","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T17:16:23","slug":"cityfibre-may-sell-minority-stake-to-raise-fibre-rollout-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/cityfibre-may-sell-minority-stake-to-raise-fibre-rollout-funding.html","title":{"rendered":"CityFibre May Sell Minority Stake to Raise Fibre Rollout Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a>, which is currently working to deploy their 1Gbps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> broadband ISP network to cover 8 million UK premises over the next five years (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/03\/cityfibre-confirm-62-uk-areas-for-4bn-ftth-broadband-rollout.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/11\/cityfibre-sign-1-5bn-of-contracts-for-uk-fttp-broadband-rollout.html\">here<\/a>), has reportedly hired bankers at UBS and Rothschild to help it sell a significant minority stake (worth many hundreds of millions) to a third potential backer.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present the operator&#8217;s on-going <strong>\u00a34bn<\/strong> deployment programme is being supported by two primary investors &#8211; the West Street Infrastructure Fund (Goldman Sachs) and Antin Infrastructure Fund. The bulk of the funding for that rollout has already been established, but there&#8217;s still some that needs to be found and this is one way of finding the necessary cash.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a> has also shown a strong desire to become involved in the UK Government&#8217;s new \u00a35bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/12\/draft-strategy-for-5bn-uk-gigabit-broadband-rollout-published.html\"><strong>Gigabit Broadband Programme<\/strong><\/a> via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Building Digital UK<\/a> team, which was highlighted last year by their first deployment into a rural village (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/09\/cityfibre-quietly-builds-fttp-broadband-into-first-uk-village.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The operator is normally much more focused upon commercial deployments in urban areas, but they&#8217;ll need more funding if they hope to take a serious slice of the gigabit programme. This wasn&#8217;t strictly part of the original plan because the government&#8217;s \u00a35bn commitment came after CF had started their rollout to UK cities and large towns.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a> spokesperson said (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/goldman-backed-broadband-giant-cityfibre-to-sell-stake-to-new-investor-12240060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky News<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can confirm that we\u2019re exploring a possible expansion of our shareholder base to support the acceleration of our build and possible participation in the BDUK rural programme.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The catch in all this is that it often takes several months to put something like this together and by then the new gigabit programme will have already started, although that wouldn&#8217;t necessarily stop them from bidding for at least some related contracts while they work on securing more funding.
